Hawaii Cars: 1981 Toyota Starlet

I love this car. Snagged one of these puppies for $500 and drove it from England, through Turkey and Central Asia to Mongolia. Blew out the rear struts twice, snapped the track bar in two places, and only had one working brake by the end. Understandable given how rusty everything was. Engine never gave us any trouble despite dirty petrol, extreme heat/cold and altitude. Drove back east across Russia and finally lay her to rest in a scrapyard outside Helsinki when the clutch started giving out. This video gives me hope that someone will rescue good old Scarlet and restore her to glory.

what i love the most about older cars is the visibility through the big glasses at the side windows and rear, the exterior lines the glass headlights and their shapes, the flat low dashboards, the large space in the engine bay. come to think about it, there isn't a thing that i dont like about older cars.

Sweet little ride. I had one of these as my second car. A Hand-me-down from my older sister. I liked the car, but man, was it underpowered! I would sometimes have to shift from 5th to 3rd to climb hills if I had any passengers. A rotary from an RX7 would be sweet in one of these. The trans was really the weak link in these cars. I had to swap mine and do a clutch job in about 30K miles. But I got one from a truck, which was supposed to be stronger.

My first car was a 81 Starlet. All my friends had newer "cooler" cars and they all broke down constantly. Min just ticked away. i drove it for a year with a cracked distributer cap but it just ran. Sadly the Swedish winters are not kind to cars so it basically rusted away. But i miss it!
