One of my favorite places to relax and unwind, and share spooky stories is a quiet town on the rainy side of the Big Island. It’s a charming little town that offers museums, art galleries, shops, restaurants... and ghosts. This episode of Hawaii’s Most Haunted brings us to Hilo.

In this series, Lopaka brings you some of Hawaii's Most Haunted places.
Master storyteller, Lopaka Kapanui, brings to life the feared Nightmarchers, the goddess Pele, Menehune, e‘epa, mo‘o and more. But… Hawaiian deities and spirits aren’t the only things residing in this island paradise. Here is also where the Japanese dog demons, the inugami, are sent to ruin the lives of unsuspecting families. Here is where the Filipino vampire-like creature, the aswang, roams in search of her next victim. And here is where the Portuguese witch, the feiteceira, spins her spells and curses at her whim. Rich in culture and traditions, these islands are overflowing with stories of ghosts and hauntings, creatures and curses. Lopaka is the keeper of these stories.
Beyond the cool, blue waters and balmy trade winds of our idealistic paradise is the thin veil which separates our world from the place where shadows talk back. Spirits, Ghosts, Legends, Facts... Experience the Hawaii most don't see every day.

Aloha from Kea"au! I've heard told by a Hawaiian woman there was a giant heiau with a huge pyramid where the Liliuokalani gardens are presently located. Apparently it was destroyed after the overthrow but some of the rocks were saved and are still there. I would love to hear more stories about Moku Keawe, especially of Puna and Kau where I've heard from many fishermen are very haunted and amazing. Mahalo

Japanese has Yokai/Yurei and Oni. Yurei are a bit more malevolent. The Oni are the demons. So for example, a female demon has ‘onna’ at the name. Think Kuchisake-onna, or “Slit Mouth Woman”. It is said if you do come across her, she wears a mask. She will ask you “Do you think I’m pretty”? If you answer yes or no, you were be killed. The way to escape is to ask her “Do you think I’M pretty”? While she thinks you then run away like hell.

Whoooa all these Japanese ghost stories in Hilo is really fascinating! And I like the idea of the earthquake disturbing graves so the spirits were reacting to that. Maybe they were running do evacuate the area? I love learning about this kind of history!

I lived in Wainaku. It’s very haunted. I told my coworker I was living there and she said there’s demons there. When I first moved in a big bag of rice ripped and I had rice to clean everywhere on the stairs. Every time I tried to throw something in the rubbish can it would get knocked off course by an invisible hand, I had to place things in.. I also heard little girls playing at 2am outside, which wouldn’t happen. Had many strange things happen there. Glad I moved!

Thank you for making these interesting videos! I grew up on Kauai, but always enjoy hearing about hauntings all over Hawaii! Especially on neighbor Islands! Astronomically, the nights of the Huaka'i Po seem to coincide with the moon of Kane? Does that mean the 28 of this month (February 2022?)

My ancestors lived on the Plantation at Papaikou in 1899, and my husband's side came from the Ali'i who lived there. I believe a ghost of a lady in Edwardian era clothes walks along the bay near Reed's Bay. This might be one of the Rose's girls who lived there.

Ive heard of a fireball somewhere in Moanalua Valley growing up in Salt Lake. Not sure which type it is or exactly where it was seen. My guess is up on the ridges somewhere by the descriptions i was given.

@@MysteriesofHawaii this happened about 3 years ago. I was hanging out with my wife and friend on our lanai at night. When I spotted a orb in the sky and we ran out onto the street to get a better look. 2 more orbs seemed to come out of the tree line like the first. They were slowly changing colors and not moving linearly as they moved up into the sky. And one by one slowly faded away. This happened in Hawaiian Beaches, big island. Love to hear what you think. It raised my eyebrow when you were talking about orbs. None of us describe it as a ball of fire. Mahalo 🤙
