Recovery crews combing through homes and vehicles burned to a cinder in Hawaii are likely to find 10 to 20 more victims per day, the governor has warned.
The death toll grew to 96 on Sunday, making this the deadliest US wildfire in more than a century.
Governor Josh Green told CBS News it could take up to 10 days to learn the full death toll.
Nearly the entire town of Lahaina was destroyed in the fire.
All residents of Lahaina - home to 12,000 people - have likely escaped or perished in the fire.

You are aware that ""elite"" people like Oprah Winfrey live in Maui, right? You know that ""elite"" people live in California/Hollywood/surroundings, where wildfires also happen, right? And you maybe know that some of the people who are homeless today, had beautiful homes, several cars, boats, businesses, and you would have considered them ""elites,"" right? That's the beauty of conspiracy theories. They work no matter what is the situation, you don't need evidence, and save the mental energy you'll use trying to know and understand what really happened and its causes.

As s Californian, I understand some of what these people are going through. My heart goes out to these families who've lost everything and to those who've lost loved ones. I hope Lahaina and Maui can learn from our experience here in norcal. PG&E was sued for the fire in Paradise, winds were upwards of 70mph that day. They didn't yet have a protocol to shut down power in those conditions because people don't like shut-offs. IMO pre-emptive shut-off might've been the only thing that could've helped, stopping wires as a source; no guarantee about anything else.... The lawsuit hasn't soothed anyone's grief or brought back the community. It has increased rates, mad restructuring the company necessary, and meant that black-outs in the hot, windy summer/fall are far more frequent. I'm not saying the situation is the same, but people need to be careful what they push for and focus on. The community should figuring out how to deal with their loss, and how they should rebuild, as well as making sure the native Hawaiians and regular people are equitably treated. That should be a big priority because in disaster situations, vulnerable communities are often helped last and get the least. #ohana💞🌺 #BewareFEMAtrailers #HousingNotHomeDepotSheds

If Hawaii electric had turned off all the power on that side of the island, how are the warning systems going to operate? I have personally installed those systems before, and if the battery back up system is not maintained properly, they will not work. You’re exactly right. The New Orleans hurricane hit killed 1,833 people, and millions were left homeless, not to mention the destruction of the economy, businesses and homes. What isn’t talked about is that the government, including the Feds, and locals knew beforehand that the levies surrounding New Orleans would not hold in the event of a big hit. My kid worked for the Feds & knew that meeting Re. The issue happened with no action taken afterwards. So, they ignored it. That’s easier in the short run, and as in this case it was all preventable, with better infrastructure from the power company whose lines started the fires, and controlled burns. Also, The island of Maui had a big fire a few years ago, so they could see the potential for a massive problem , if they were interested in prevention.

Because there's no reason to inundate the zone with airmen, who have no training in relief, search, retrieving human remains, investigating fires, etc. Their training prepares them to rain death from the sky, so, it's a bit like all of the contrary that's needed. Some ppl interviewed said they got evacuation warnings on their phones, but it may have been minutes before the fire came thru. I don’t think FEMA helps with rebuilding homes, or does it? That’s why there’s a big emphasis on house insurance in hurricane areas, bc if you’re not insured you’re out of luck. My property on a FL island hit by the last hurricane has trees down, and I’m paying $2,500 out of pocket to have them removed

FEMA doesn't do anything to help people. They are only there to search and find bodies who didn't make it out alive during the fire. The spokesperson even admitted openly on the press conferences and on news interview from Hawai'i News Now, KHON 2, and KITV 4 news stations

Many move to anger instead of processing their sadness. A common attribute, because most of us have never been taught the process of being present with sadness till it passes. I don't understand why there can't be a call in, or online list where people register that they are alive. this would give a very accurate and immediate accountability of who is alive and who is dead. This should be standard process around the world. and finally,, what sort of alarm should they have had? And even if there was an alarm set in place,,, who would have known what it's for,,, tsumnami, hurricane, etc.. and how could you expect an entire town to know how to evacuate at once without guidance,, without rehearsal?? For as reposts are given,, there was fire, and then escape means were gone for most. And this was in the afternoon.

The very large area took 17 minutes to explode into flames and be Vaporizede. The smoke and fire took days to go out but, massive energy bursts in seconds for each structure and its occupants to die. 7 Pulses per second , per structure to kill and Vaporize the occupants. This was no damned wild fire it was DEW @@billmoretz8718

An audible warning earlier might have given more people extra time to save their life or someone else’s or make a call to a loved one and tell them that they love them…we can’t underestimate what more time could have done as it creates opportunities.

The siren warning system is for Tsunamis which would send people away from the shore and up the mountain. Having the sirens go off only would have brought confusion and might at best awoken anyone asleep enabling them to see what was going on with fire. Even then, it moved too fast for the sirens to be any help.

How about an alarm system with audible spoken warnings? How about we do everything you can and have systems that warn as quickly and as large a population as possible? We need to all think about what can save lives, even if it’s 5 more minutes extra time. It all matters, split second decisions can mean life or death…
