Today would be my grandmother's 104th birthday. She was born in Hawaii in 1917, the year that Queen Lili passed away. Our family has 140 years of history in Hawaii, and I am beyond grateful and proud to be from such a beautiful culture so full of love and warmth. My grandmother embodied and epitomized the Aloha spirit, and taught me so much about Ohana, love, generosity and kindness; a queen in her own right. #LouiseOkuBorges #JimmyBorges #CarolyneBorges #CynthiaBorges #RestInParadise

My dad is Hawaiian and my mom haole and we grew up in the mainland. But we were raised Hawaiian. This. The aloha and grace of our queen to compose a song for a peer. She could've just given her a seashell. Some kukui nuts. Instead she gives a masterpiece....because that's who she and we are. You can feel her greatness and goodwill in the mele, man, it just envelopes you. I know I'm Hawaiian when I hear it. And the hula, Weldon and the boys are on point!! One of my all time fav jamz, for sure.

Love this song and Weldon's performance with the exceptional (and very famous) dancers. [FYI: The mother, Kapua Dalire-Moe, is a former Miss Aloha Hula (as well as her 2 younger sisters) -- it's like the Miss Universe of hula. Kapua is a kumu hula (hula teacher) and runs a very prestigious halau (hula dance academy) that was established by her mother, Aloha Dalire (the very first Miss Aloha Hula, crowned in 1971). Kapua's daughter, Kili, is a serious contender for the title of Miss Aloha Hula at the next annual Merrie Monarch Festival in 2021 (the 2020 festival was cancelled due to pandemic). ] Thanks for sharing this beautiful performance. I'm tangata whenua from Aotearoa/New Zealand my mum was very in love with Hawaiian music its ppl and history, we heard beautiful and challenging times for the Queen and her ppl when Colonization spoke like a three pronged fork..2 or more deliberate conflicting msgs for her and her ppl while legislation enforced racist laws to counteract what was promised..the all too familiar story.. My visit to Hawaiiknui and Tahitinui 2012'sh was like reliving our mums stories.. I came away with the belief that tangata whenua (you) are the "rangimarie" (peaceful) whanau of us🤔 in the Pacific Is. Aotearoa have recently bcum very challenging in how we stand, sing and dance..it wasn't like that in my day..we were becoming uniform in our actions in my day, but the influence of those old kuia in my young life..depending on the story in hand, it was no big deal to vary our actions. 1990s' progressing te reo maori has been beautiful to listen to hear and to watch our mokopuna grow confident by day..the attitude to being Maori is 99.5% great until politics drive the conversation.. I saw that attitude slowly coming to your shores, by your youth..was still humble by comparison just different to that majority..then again we need leaders for change just hope they protect the peaceful attitude your ppl have. Our mums family carried that gift very well here in Aotearoa reminding us to be humble in how we think, what we do things and respectfully to our ppl..to be humble we learn to love unconditionally that's how I saw your whanau in Hawakinui n Tahitinui ngamihi aroha whanau 🕊⚘️🕊🙏🕊⚘️🕊🌿💕👋

I've been to Hawaii only twice. There is definitely something magical about that place. I listened to Island 98.5 while there and then downloaded iheart radio to listen back home in OZ. I remember flying out on one of the trips back home listening to IZ Hawaii 78 and I got really emotional leaving. I started to cry a bit in the plane... I tried to hide it. I don't understand Hawaiian but it speaks to me of indigenous cultures slowly being erroded over time along with lands/rights as civilisations move forward... not necessarily for the bettter 😞 I've been to quite a few countries in my time but nothting 'feels' like Hawaii. I plan on coming back with my 2yr old daughter so she can experience the islands. I come back to this video every now and then... fascinated by the recording which is astounding, transfixed by the beauty of the dancing and moved by the culture. Long live Hawaii 💗
