Careful of anchoring and make sure you have a really good anchor, and enough anchor rope to properly apply the correct scope in accordance to the depth to anchor line ratio!!!!!! Trust me when I say in windy conditions like Tradewinds exposed waters, especially near any major points with some of the main channels in the islands, the currents can rip so strong they are impossible to swim against!!!! If the wind is blowing out to sea, out you go and your a needle in a haystack!!!! Glad you got a skiff, and it really opens up the diving to you!!! BUT, REMEMBER SAFETY, SAFETY, SAFETY!!!!!!!!!!! LEARN SEAMANSHIP, BOATING AND NAVIGATION!!!!!! TAKE A COAST GUARD CLASS!!!!! LEARN FROM AN EXPERT CAPTAIN WHO IS WILLING TO TEACH YOU!!!! WIth 1 small kicker engine on an inflatable, you can get blown in the wind severely. If your engine stops working, and believe me IT WILL!!! Murphys law brah!!!!! It will happen at the worst possible time!!! Like when your near a channel and the current and wind is too strong to swim back to shore. Eddie Aikau tried, and on a surfboard when the Hokulea got in trouble and he perished at sea a long time ago!!! It's super dangerous! Understand that the Alenuihaha channel is listed by the coast Guard as one of the 10 roughest stretches of ocean on the planet!!! Find a really experienced captain, preferably one who has fished commercially and someone who fished the Big island, all over the island, especially in the extremely rough Tradewinds exposed waters, who will be willing to teach you!!! Fisherman, especially the best ones who are catching the most fish regularly are notoriously difficult to talk to and get them to teach you!! In Hawaii especially, remember to be super humble when approaching them and talking to them and always be respectful!!!!! If your lucky you will find someone, perhaps an older Fisherman who spent 20-30 years on the ocean like myself. There are lots of us out there. I learned from hands on experience, reading all the best books on the subject as I could find, and then from a few legendary Fisherman who took a liking to me and just poured all thier knowledge into me!!!!! Remember these Fisherman and captains spent most of thier lives on the ocean and the knowledge they have came from years and years of hard work, learning from their mistakes and hands on experience!!! If your humble, super humble, especially in Hawaii, then you can learn from them what took years of time in a relatively short period. Again, SAFETY, SAFETY, SAFETY!!!!! Get a flare gun, vhf radio and an epirb! Don't take risks that could cause you to be lost at sea!! Hawaii is the most isolated land mass on the planet!!!! It's a really huge ocean out there and it's like finding a needle in a haystack. From the air, in the C130 or helicopter you are so small it's extremely difficult to be seen!!!! Best advice I can give you, is: look at everything from the standpoint of stacking the odds in your favor by preparing for the absolute worst possible scenario which could have you lost at sea and perish!!!!! Learn things about proper anchoring technique, and different types of anchors and anchor ropes, and chain and shackles and rigging techniques and tying knots etc!!!!!! There are so many tricks of the trade in rigging and preventing either going on the rocks or being swept out to sea!!! Things like a Japanese rock anchor, and the dimensional length schematics for welding one up that will work!! Like for instance a 60 degree angle on the "hook" and how to rig it with a break away set up so you can retrieve it if it gets stuck in deep water. On the ocean in a boat, especially a small inflatable near major land points and the main channels, it is extremely hazardous and you can be just gone like that!!!!! Just want you to be safe while you enjoy following your passion brah!!! I have lived my entire life born and raised in Hawaii pursuing my love of the ocean, surfing, diving and fishing. We have world class waterman and women in Hawaii! Just carefully choose who you learn from, and make sure they are truly an expert with the reputation and experience to back up what they teach. No couch wanna be types. Someone who really lived it and was one of the best. If your lucky and really humble you might get a true "legend" to share his expertise and knowledge with you!!!! I spent so many years fishing and diving throughout the main Hawaiian islands as well as in the leeward Islands all the way up to midway!!! Talk about epic diving! In the Northwestern Hawaiian islands I saw places and was diving where it is pristine and untouched by man!!!!!! I spent 20 + years commercial fishing on my custom Force 30 on the Big island, and I fished all over the island especially in the most remote areas where I would rarely see any other boats!!!! Sadly, many fishermen get old and pass on without having someone they feel is worthy of passing on their knowledge!!! Find someone like that and if they are willing to teach you, spend as much time with them as you can. Bring them fresh fish, and live the "spirit of aloha" by the sharing and giving of gifts that makes Hawaii so special!!! Remember to always respect your elders!! This is so very important, but sadly, many of the younger generation these days do not do this. Be respectful and gracious for those who laid the foundation of what you like to do long before you were born. Our kupuna in Hawaii deserve this. Take care of the Aina! Put out good mana and receive it's blessings! No ka oi! D.L.
