Greetings from Northern Cape South Africa. Thanks for the sanctuary update vlog. Lovely to see you help out the hawk, nature needs a kind helping hand sometimes. Freak accidents do happen. We rescued a large water monitor. It was lying on its back with its tongue all dehydrated and lying outside of its mouth. I had gone into upington with my daughter for most of the day, because its quite the distance to travel. She managed to roll the tongue back after we poured water over it, using wooden ice cream sticks. We lifted the water monitor together, into a half blue drum cut lengthways, with a little water in the drum. My son in law fed it beat raw eggs for two days with a large syringe. Once it was able to work its tongue normally again we released it back into the Orange River. It happily was tipped onto the river bank out of its temporary home. Lovely to watch it running into the water and swimming off We think that it was dropped by a fish eagle. Poor thing lay on its back in the full sun busy drying out until we got home late afternoon.

hi Chis, wow that is a really interesting plan with the habitat materials placed on your extra property to attract snakes. It will be a neat process to see what kinds you are attracting at different times of the year and how many. it is so fun to have that wild part of your property for extra activities and just to enjoy and give nature a home. Prayers for Dino and blessings to all!

Chris, so glad the hawk is good to go. Was that a red-tailed hawk?Their talons are something else. I have a hawk that visits my bird feeders occasionally. It usually gets a mourning dove. I think it’s a Cooper’s hawk, but not positive. Poor little Jet, that thunder scared him. Loved the closeup of Hazel’s sweet face. Have a blessed weekend. Hugs from Tennessee. 💕

@gatorchris you should keep offering Hazel the fruits and other foods by hand, even when she grabs the chicken leg and runs. She's looking to you for more food. She may get to that point where she will eat the others out of your hand too. Been thinking this the last few weeks as she keeps coming back to you, stepping up on the log, looking for food. Keep offering. She's definitely coming around!

You did so right by getting the bird of prey to a rehabber. He was one scared red tail hawk. I found out a long time ago as a child birds are not my forte to rehab birds. Once they're past needing rehab I'm great with them. What I do best rehabbing are some mammals reptiles and amphibians . I am still in the process of trying to start a sanctuary for California toads and if I could make it completely California amphibians because most of them are endangered in this area because it's a farming area and they use so much pesticides and stuff like that that harm animals including taking their land from them. Initially I was born and grew up in the San Francisco Bay area and lived in that area till I was 40 and then I moved to central valley California because my husband worked at the hospital here and my grandmother just lost our grandpa and she was here. Believe it or not there is quite a few wild animals that live in the San Francisco Bay area and of course we have the ocean 🌊 The San Francisco garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis tetrataenia) is a federally endangered species that lives in isolated populations in the coastal and bayside wetlands of San Mateo County, California. The snake's limited range and preferred habitats make it vulnerable to habitat destruction, urbanization, and the decline of its food source, the California red-legged frog. I actually caught both as a young girl. I was born in 1960. I was like you Chris when you were a kid. We have had so many animals disappear out of California it is sad and our pesticides almost made our condors go extinct.

Chris I tried checking eastern snouts and I don’t know if I am too far but wanted information about the foster piggies. What kind how big? Can they be litter box trained? Life expectancy? I know that I can’t handle prarie dog (or my dad calls them ground squirrels he’s from western KS) or kuadi but I like to get information so that I can provide the best possible care for the longest quality life possible.
