What is IL-2 Great Battles?
The new generation of IL-2 Sturmovik titles is developed by 1CGS and is a combat flight simulator of the World War II era and carries on the tradition created by the original IL-2 Sturmovik first released in 2001. Sturmovik recreates the aircraft, their use in the war and the environment they flew in. This latest product is a successor of the classic IL-2 Sturmovik that was a leader of the sim genre for more than 10 years. The new IL-2 is true to the ideas born by the first title with an accurate representation of aircraft and famous WWII battles.

Although the Spitfire gets all of the glory. The Hawker Hurricane is the unsung hero of the Battle of Britain. During the struggle to maintain air superiority over the skies of Great Britain. Hurricanes took the brunt of the Luftwaffe’s strength until the Supermarine Spitfire came on the scene in sufficient numbers. About 1,715 Hawker Hurricanes were fielded during the Battle of Britain and they accounted for 60% of all Arial victories by the RAF during the pivotal battle.
Overall, the Hawker Hurricane turned out to be quite the workhorse for the allies. From the Cliffs of Dover to the Jungles of Burma. From the Deserts of north Africa to the Steppes of Russia. The Hawker Hurricane Proved to be an effective, durable and flexible platform that would see service in one form or another from the start of the Second World War until the end.

This is most likely my favourite collector aircraft too, just for sheer versatility. .303 bullet hoses, cannons, anti-tank guns, bombs and rockets to choose from on one platform is just so much fun.

One of my customers was in the RAF auxiliary.. She has flown most WWII aeroplanes. She tells me that she rates the Hurricane over the merlin powered Spitfire. It was only when the Spit got the Griffin engine it became good.

Just remember the Hurricane was based off of a biplane fighter that was later converted over to the monoplane formula for the Hurricane prototype for faster speed and climb rates, sort of like with the F4F Wildcat was based off of the preceding F3F flying barrel.

Whoever modelled that cockpit did a phenomenal job. It looks like a proper front line fighter; paint chipped, dust, grime, wear and tear etc. No factory-freshness, this is a workhorse :D

Yeah great fun plane for IL2. A fair bit on the slow side for mid war period but still robust and great in a turn fight. Oh yes - and the battle of Britain ones had ammo for a whole 16 seconds of firing time. Yes really. You're better off with the Shvaks - at least when you hit you do some decent damage.

the Russians found that the coolant system of the Hurricane could not cope withthe extreme cold of Northern Russia so they modified them to have extra drain valves in the coolant pipes, as well as the means to quickly drain the oil from the engines. On operations, they found that when the aircraft landed for the night, they would drain both oil and coolant and then refill them with warmed oil and coolant before the next day's flying. They liked the radios,quality of the canopy, side hatch, wide undercarriage stance,tough steel tube airframeand over all ease of use of the aircraft.

Great video. I had a 'Structural failure, bail out!' message the other day, but when inspecting the damage there wasn't anything wrong. Must have broken some kind of oddball internal break that didn't actually affect the plane but marked it as a failure.

The brownings also not only had shear ammo count, they were picked as there was less than a 50% chance even one would jam expending all that ammo. There was no mechanism to clear a jam as the likelihood as so low. The downside, not great anti-bomber ammo.

Yeah, the most effective tactic for the Hurricane is get in close, put your nose on the target...then just hold down the trigger. Carefully aimed bursts don't do much because of the lack of punch, but you have 12 MGs with all the ammo in the world.

Tuff little aircraft, once it got its metal wings and some much needed armour it could take a hell of a lot of damage I believe, the gun well put enough holes is something it bound to burst in to flames.

You gotta give the 40mm a go, with HE shells. You get 15 shots (30 rounds, 2 guns). But one hit will kill. I've actually gone well in MP averaging 4-6 kills a flight with it - nobody expects to get one tapped like that. Not necessarily for a video (unless you really enjoy it too), but just give it a quick fly. The muzzle velocity is surprisingly high.

14:40 both engines? Way better punch with the cannons and the 12,7 mm guns: buckshot vs. birdshot. Collect Me 109 wheels. 100 wheels: win a weekend on the T 34. 50 wheels: a whole week T 34 and so on. All in all it´s looking very promising with the Hurry. Please go on.

The problem with DCS is the track recorder. It is tedious to get all of the cool external shots I get in IL-2. I do want to make more Hornet videos though.

you know, those .303's are really a *hot* topic of debate: many say they were inadequate for Air-to-Air, I say they're *fire* if you aim just right. I'm not sorry

I have noticed more enemy fires with this aircraft as well. I think its due to the High fire rate ....many BBs hitting , and each hit in the right section of the enemy plane that's a small chance for a fire. 50 2% die rolls well your going to make one of them. :)

I wonder if it's also partially because De Wilde incendiary 7.7mm ammunition is modeled, it was known for being roughly 2x as effective as the equivalent German 7.92mm incendiary ammo in starting fires

When you bring the throttle down it buzzes. I believe it is a landing gear warning. Other aircraft like the Spitfire have this feature.

Watching this, and seeing you fly the hurricane smoothly makes me wonder whether the IL2 dover game has the same flight model as what you're playing. I bought the battle of britain game because it was cheaper, but I can barely take off and when I'm in the air the plane wants to roll right all the time, despite me not changing anything from when I spawned into the cockpit

Never played a flying game so i don't know what to look for, but to be fair this looks very awesome & i would certainly give it a try. Right my main question to you wolfpack365 is are you likely to start a new patrol in SH3 ? i do hope you are & if you do would you consider the electric u boat ? myself i have never played with the type XXI but i am on course to doing so, admittedly i have long way to go as i am currently patrolling in 1942. Anyway i can only hope that you might consider starting a new patrol in SH3. Keep up the great work wolfpack as it has been super enjoyable.

The Hurricane's Merlin definitely doesn't sound the same as that of the Spitfire, I've seen and heard both aircraft up close numerous times in air shows and I must say it sounds pretty accurate. They probably recorded the sound of a real one, there are still quite a few airworthy examples.

Unless I'm missing your reference to something, the .303 in the Hurricane was a Browning chambered in .303, not a Vickers Limited which were phased out end of WW1.

I had a question, is the Hurricane part of any module or is it strictly a collector plane? i was under the impression if i bought Normandy it would come with it, not sure why i thought this, been playing every version of this game since it came out in the early 2000s, guess i was hopping for a one time 80 dollar hit,lol, thank you for your time.

The Hurricane is not part of Battle of Normandy. Battle of Normandy is coming with 10 aircraft. P-51B/C, P-47D “Razorback”, Typhoon Mk.Ib, Mosquito F.B. Mk.VI, Bf 109 G-6 “Late”, Fw 190 A-6, Ju 88 C-6a and Me 410. Battle of Normandy is still in early access so I would recommend Battle of Bodenplatte if you want western aircraft which is feature complete. The Hawker Hurricane is in fact only a collectors aircraft. I would wait a few days though. I guarantee you there will be a sale soon. Most IL-2 products go on sale from 50% -75% off. $80 can get you quite a lot during a sale :)

I bought Normandy but i hadn't taken a look at it, i just realized why i thought that the Hurricane would be in it, Normandy+very close to England+Spitfire+naturally Hurricane since they go hand in hand but i guess not,lol, oh well that Mosquito and the 410 that are on the way will more than offset any love i might have for the Hurri , ill just buy it later on clearance, thanks again for that quick reply and have a good holiday!!

I've had trouble IDing between 109s from Hurricanes when doing career missions just because the wings look too similar. Any tips on differentiating the two from a distance?

I think the main giveaway for the Hurricane is the hump and the nose! It will just take some practice.

What’s the difference between a 109 vs 190 when ID during flight?

Shape of the wings and the fuselage - the 190's body is shaped like a wedge due to the radial at the front, and the wings are more angular.
