Bill Humble (Hawker test pilot) said, when comparing The Tempest to The Sea Fury, "You could take The Tempest to the vicars tea party. The Sea Fury would be getting its nickers off on the first night." Quite an accolade I think. 😁

I seen a couple of these at Reno in 2015 and I was floored at how much faster it was than the Mustangs. They were lapping the Ponies by the fourth lap it seemed. It was very impressive to see how slow the Sea Fury was once they were up against planes like Rare Bear, Voodoo, Strega lol.....
@johncrispin21188 ай бұрын
Lovely aeroplane but as the pilot mentioned should be ‘Centaurus powered” , So what would you call what was a sea fury without the engine it was designed with by Sydney Camm. ? Nice to see them flying but hopefully you get another and use it with the Centaurus to show us what they once were, even with ‘only’ 2500hp with the Bristol engine the Navy pilots managed to shoot down a mig 15 jet . Thank you for troubling to explaining the engine swap. 8est of luck.

In mph…. Hawker Fury X 460, P-51D 437…. That’s 23 mph faster. Plus post war P-51H was 487.
@briansilcox57208 ай бұрын
P-51 runs off and leaves the Sea Fury above 25,000 feet, which mattered when they were front line equipment. It’s kind of academic now. There’s a reason many Sea Furies are Wright powered. More parts available. More props too. Nice video.

Bit of exaggeration during the interview, the R-3350 at least the type fitted to the Sea Furies are rated at 2,800hp. Some later 3350's made around 3,700hp in different applications but were a lot less reliable.

Okay, so when was the Sea Fury designed and when was the Merlin Mustang designed?
@rhondohslade7 ай бұрын
I believe it was about the same time frame but the Merlin Mustang was in service almost two years sooner, IIRC.
@johncrispin21187 ай бұрын
I think I am correct in saying Camm had a Centaurus engined version in the Tempest development 1941-2 and it was proven the fastest of the lot which became the Tempest 2 .It then led to the Fury, but the Tempest 2 was baulked by two things, lack of manufacturing capacity as the Sabre Tempest was then in full production (you go with what you’ve got ?) especially with the FW190 scare . Perversely it was Armin Fabers gifted FW 190 that shifted the blimpish view that held up Camms work with the Centaurus (along with the departure from Bristols of Roy Fedden the driving force behind the Bristol Radials ) it being abundantly clear that the Focke Wulf was awesomely fast and had a Radial motor BMW 801. The Merlin Mustang again came about solely by the perseverance of Ronny Harker , RR’s test pilot insisting it was worthwhile to the bosses who were quite up thier necks in supplying Merlin’s in ever greater numbers and keeping up a massive development schedule. Some good reading on this; ‘Fedden” by Bill Gunston. ”From the wings” by Ronnie Harker, “The great Horsepower race “ by Calum Douglas, and “Tempests Over Europe “ by R Beaumont.

No, the Corsair was not 1st.
@rhondohslade7 ай бұрын
I believe that honor belonged to the prototype P-38 flown by Lt. Ben Kelsey on the cross country flight to New York from the LA area when ATC wouldn't clear it to land because they hadn't been informed that it was coming in and they, foolishly, had other traffic in the pattern. Result: ran out of fuel on go around and wrote off aircraft due to wheels up, off field excursion onto golf course.
@Jack-bs6zb6 ай бұрын
The Corsair was good in the Pacific theatre with lower altitude dogfighting but in Europe where fighting at high altitudes was more common it was less successful. Captain Eric Winkle, with experience in the largest number of types and the first to land a jet on a carrier as well as the world record for the most carrier landings stated the Sea Fury and Bearcat were the two best prop fighters he experience.

Hate to say it but it isn't a Sea Fury but a Hawker Fury (AKA Baghdad Fury) of Iraqi Air Force. Also it was rebuilt to race at Reno, hence why the Cyclone was fitted, main reason is easier to maintain and better to tune than a Centaurus. Also VH-SHF is another Iraqi Fury that is still airworthy in Australia, however has not flown for a number of years to illegal/criminal activity and being seized by Police.
@zooomdelivery84608 ай бұрын
Mate these are entertaining videos from a young fella out there having a go. Yep sure well done you know some facts. The plane is a representation of a RAN Sea Fury that is currently flying for the public to appreciate. If the other you mention is out of annual then it isn’t airworthy. So thus making this one the only flying in Australia. Enjoy the videos mate they are for entertainment.
@ryandaly68848 ай бұрын
@@zooomdelivery8460Where did I have a dig at the kid? A simple Google search brings up the history of this aircraft and in way more detail. Sure it represents a RAN Sea Fury but it never flew with the RAN, ex Iraqi Air Force to be correct as I stated and both are quite different. Also there are quite a number of warbirds in Australia that are airworthy but rarely fly in the public eye, the most famous one is the RAAF Sabre which has an ejection seat issue.

100knts faster than a Mustang? I don't think so Tim.
@BeSnappy8 ай бұрын
He flies both Mustang and the Sea Fury. You can hear him saying in the video that it is a push to get the Mustang to 300 knots, but he can get the Sea Fury to 400 knots.
@johnjensen22178 ай бұрын
If you look at any original source material from North American and Hawker you will definitely find that the Fury is not 100 kts. faster under any circumstances. I think what the pilot means is that he feels more comfortable pushing the Fury to higher power settings than the Mustang without risk of over stressing the engine. The cost of rebuilding one these engines is enormous and they are definitely not run as hard today compared to wartime.
@guaporeturns94728 ай бұрын
It’s about 500 knts cooler though

While the absolute top speed may not have changed much due to the 3350, with likely more than a thousand additional horsepower, I can see that making a significant improvement to cruise.

Lots of WW2 fighters dominated the mustang. The mustang had endurance and is the chosen propaganda queen. Without a doubt, aviations most over rated airplane of all time. Glad to see something other than (and better than) a mustang
@khaccanhle19302 ай бұрын
My thoughts exactly. The mustang is a good plane, but is very over-rated. It's fame is largely that it came out at just the right time in early 44, when the back was arrested broken on the enemy Air Forces. The war could have been easily won without it in both theaters with other planes. Late war planes like: P47-N, Tempest, F4U-4 not to mention the Fury were superior.

Since you are pushing the very Britishness of the Sea Fury, WHY have you converted it to a Wright R-3350 from the Bristol Centaurs engine? That is a bastardization of a classic airframe and essentially telling a lie about what the aircraft is.

Faster than a Mustang? Sorry kid but Big Whoop. The Mustang was designed to escort slow rumbling B-17's from England to Germany & back. It was designed for range & endurance, not necessarily speed. Carrier-based Sea Furies were designed to be fast, short-range interceptors to protect a carrier strike group. Sure, it might do 400 knots, but for how long?
