What Thanos did was a desparate act of solving a major issue with an excessive method. I don't agree with the method, but it comes from somewhere, considering he's been to many worlds. If metals, fossil fuels, and the ozone layer were repairable (may be a way), overpopulation will sort itself out with conflict and starvation, though hopefully not by organized force.
