How in the world does Hawkgirl, mace or not, get even close to killing Dr. Fate? That’s absolutely ridiculous. The cartoon nerfed him worse than the Black Adam movie did. And that’s saying something. I guess she’ll take out The Spectre next.

They were trying to play up how advanced Thanagarians were with their technology and weapons creation that Nth metal could distrust magic, created to defy their Lovecraftian gods. Its less about having made Fate weak and more about how dam powerful they made her mace.

Thanks for the cool video, friend. I especially liked that you combined in it more than one episode in it, as they make a sort of arch around what you interestingly called "Magical League", probably, for the lack of a better name (and of course, because of them being lead by Dr. Fate, to "defend" the Earth against a sort of threat involving mysticism, other dimensions etc.). As an old comic-book fan (since from the 1960's), when I first put my eyes on that JL Cartoon (I must have watched it in the early 2000's), I saw in it something very special, and here is my hypothesis about it. I am pretty sure about it, although surprised for never seeing any comment on the same view, so, if somebody would have any feedback on it, it would be all right. In my opinion, that arch and the "Magical League" are a clear homage from the cartoon authors to the original Marvel Comics "The Defenders" group, and the first part of it mirrors the 1973 Avengers vs. Defenders War, by Steve Englehart & John Buscema (may others). As for the (ORIGINAL) Defenders, they were so cool, for being (in contrast to all the other Marvel Groups, in particular, the Avengers) not exactly a much formal or institutional "team", but a bunch of extremely interesting characters, all of them misfits and anti-social, sort of anti-heroes, usually loners, who would gather as necessity would push them, in order to "defend" the Earth... There was a first gather of such characters (Namor, the Silver Surfer and the Hulk) geting united for that end, and right away, they had to face the Avengers (I don't recall at which title it happened). Soon the Hulk and Namor were united to Dr. Strange and "the Defenders" had a title of their own, and at some point the Silver Surfer was with them, and others joined, such as the Valkyrie, and others. Then, in 1973, as a way to celebrate the 10th Avengers Aniversary, Dormammu and Loki got united and devised a plan that lead the Avengers to fight the Defenders, a story arch that took place in both of their titles for several editions (interestingly, the way the groups fought, in order to get the parts of the Evil-Eye was much latter recycled by George Perez, for his seminal JL vs. Avengers story). Well, this JL Cartoon "Magic League" perfectly fits the main characters of that first Defenders group: Dr. Fate (Dr. Strange) leading Aquaman (Namor), Salomon Grundy (the Hulk), Hawckgirl (the Valkyrie) and Amazon (the Silver Surfer). In my view, it is not just in those specific episodes, but all the conceptions of these DC heroes which was carefully devised for a closer match, whenever needed, with the respective Marvel characters. Plus, the JL here plays exactly the role the Avengers played back in the 1973 arch, the group of boy-scout heroes who fight the anti-heroes, partially for mistrusting them, although they were rightly saving the world. Superman vs. Grundy ( Thor vs. Hulk), Wonder Woman vs. Aquaman (Captain America vs. Namor) are sort of obvious matches. As for Hawckgirl vs. Fate, at that point she did not belong to the group, and sort of fits the role of the Mantis/Black Panther vs. Dr. Strange fight. The scene in which Fate sends each pair to fight at some special part of the world seems to be hardly a coincidence! At the end, pretty much like in the comics, the two groups join forces to fight the real evil. Salomon Grundy was never such a Hulk-like character, as he was in that cartoon, and Namor was never such a Namor-like character, as he became in it, as well. What about Amazo? The JL Cartoon made him in great contrast with the original character, looking much more like a cosmic being with existential issues, a sort of "Golden Surfer", from start. Hawckgirl in the comics was never conceived as such a "barbaric" sort of warrior, as in this version. I don't know, maybe it is just me seeing links everywhere, but I guess the links I am seeing are actually there. Plus, it is not the only JL / Avengers parallel in the series. There is also a wonderful episode of the series, in which the JL goes back in time to the Old West and join the three main DC Western characters, in other to fight a "Chronos" (David *CLINTON*) character, who was trapped in time in the West, all being also a match with an Avengers 1970's arch in with they went to the West, and teamed with the three main Marvel western characters, plus *CLINT* Barton (the Hawckeye) who had been trapped in time, and they fought Kang the Conqueror. If I would be right on those parallels, I would not consider any of them to be any sort of ripping of. I see all of that as great script-writing for the JL, rendering homage to comics of all time, which happened not only towards the Avengers and the Defenders, but towards all the best of comic book groups and characters, in all the episodes: the JSA, the Crime Syndicate, and even less known groups, such as the Seven Soldiers of Victory, and to the JL itself, in more than one version. We could see interesting (but more subtle) homages to Marvel groups such as the FF and the Invaders, in other episodes. Why was the JL Cartoon and all the DC Animated Universe such an outstanding success? If you would ask me, there is just one reason: it was made by people who ACTUALLY LOVE and UNDERSTAND comic characters and their stories, who value them and honor them, in all sorts of ways, who deeply feels what they mean for people. In every media (movies included), whenever that condition is fulfilled, the results are great. Every time somebody is charged to produce super-hero or comic stories at another media, but producers pick someone who does not love and understand them in their original versions, and is convinced that they should be "adapted to fit reality" or "the other media", the magic is simply gone. How could you gather a public loving super-heroes issued in comic books, when the very person delivering them, does not? How could you expect people to find meaning in what you do, if it doesn't mean anything to yourself? Go figure!

that was very weird. Like it made some sense he disappeared as not to let Grundy absorb his vast amount of power, but he just buggered off and never returned to the show even when Hawkgirl killed Grundy 5 minutes later. It felt like the writers were saying "Yeeaaaah we made him too OP, he'd just mess with the story, need to remove him"

I started to watch these types of youtube videos about year ago. And about 70% of the time ive seen him, he was living in the sewers And i believe those episodes or clips has to be more new than this episode, because why else would grundy be always in sewers if there is basically origin story just about him living in sewers :D from new justice league . Where the name solomon grundy comes from if he had totally different name before getting killed ? And imagine if mobsters back in the golden age of bank robbers would do some curse spell and dumb him in some special water :D They killed people on daily basis so this origin story is so bad.
