The Southwest Wildlife Foundation of Utah (SWF) cares for more than 100 sick, injured and orphaned native wildlife annually. Restoring them to health and returning them to the wild is our primary goal, but for those that cannot be released due to disabilities, the Cedar Canyon Nature Park (CCNP) can provide them with a permanent home in a natural setting while enhancing our visitors educational experience at the park.

Martin Tyner
Since age twelve, with a bird on his arm, Martin has captivated audiences sharing his knowledge and experience of his wildlife friends.
At age nineteen, Martin was hired as curator of birds of prey at Busch Gardens, CA. He also worked in the movie and television industry training big cats, elephants, primates, sea mammals and raptors.
“One of my greatest childhood fantasies was the desire to create a personal friendship with a wild eagle. I found myself with a love and fascination for these powerful creatures.”
Martin Tyner is a federally licensed falconer, eagle falconer, wildlife rehabilitator, wildlife propagator, and wildlife and environmental educator.
He has been providing wildlife and environmental programs throughout the western United States, to schools, scouts and community groups for over fifty years.
“Grandpa believed in a very simple philosophy; that a person should get up every morning and do good. Doing good means that you do well for others and doing well means that you do good for yourself. There is nothing wrong with doing well, but Grandpa always believed in doing good.”
Martin's book, Healer of Angels, reflects back on his life: from a young boy terrified of birds to becoming the first man in North America licensed to train a wild golden eagle in the ancient art of falconry.
Through a heartwarming collection of true stories he describes his challenging transformation from a shy dyslexic teenager, to the founder and CEO of the Southwest Wildlife Foundation.

I love this so much! The red-tailed hawk that I watch did not migrate. I get to watch it year round if i want. Since I broke my ankle in october, I missed a lot. I missed the eagles that come every year. They come to Higgins Point every year for the salmon.

At first, I had no idea what was going on. I thought maybe she was hunting for rabbits for you to take home to feed all the other animals. Now, I am assuming this was to let her do her natural thing. I wonder if it would make sense to bring a mobile 3-4 meter high "perch" [the challenge is to make it stable enough at the top for the animal to feel comfortable using it ... while keeping it light enough to be carried around through semi-rough terrain] for the bird to have a better angle on the area AND an easier start for the flight. The "beater" then goes around the perch in a decently sized circle to scare the rabbits into revealing their position.

Why does Belle have bells attached to her feet? Doesn't that make it harder to hunt? It will warn the prey that the hawk is coming right?

It's to make the bird easier to find and so that you can hear it when it moves if you aren't looking at it. The prey don't make the connection between the bell sound and the bird.

Sometimes it's difficult to hear the screams of the rabbits when Bella catches them. Wish Martin could expedite (break there necks) them much faster.

I don’t understand why you’ve got a belle on your hawk, especially when you are taking her out hunting. I imagine it would be very frustrating for your hawk given she’s supposed to be silent when approaching a Her prey and the bell is giving away her coming. Why not just allow her to do what is natural? Just to hunt and catch something to eat?

The rabbits don't perceive the sound of her bell as any threat. There are plenty of other hawk sounds that alert them of her approach.

Great to see Belle hunting but what a moral breaking place to take her to hunt her. She needs a chance to succeed. Any chance to succeed would be better than this baren landscape out dead scrub. Poor Belle.
