Hawkins pressure cooker maintenance

How to determine when it's time to replace a safety valve on Hawkins pressure cookers. Depending on frequency of use the safety valve should be replaced to prevent failure. This video will show different levels of wear and also cover tool required for replacement.

I have replaced the valve before and then the metal plug had totally blown out of the valve. This time the metal plug was still in the valve, and so I was unsure if this was the problem. Your illustrations showing the stages of deterioration really help me know that the plug is the problem and is worn out. It also helps to know it makes no difference whether the screw is on the inside or the outside of the lid. Thanks very much.

Greetings from Egypt, buddy! I think you are replacing it in a wrong way, Apiary. Here is why:1. Your cooker seems to be a stainless steel one while you are using the valve of an aluminum one. As far as I have researched, it should work anyway. But, better, use B30-10 valve instead of that B10-102. The washer should be on the other side per Hawkins instructions on their Web page3. You should have used a sealant or glue on the valve threads per Hawkins instructions

Thank you Mr. Fareed, actually this valve is a B10-10 not sure if its a newer stainless one. The washer was installed on the inside simply because it was easier. The valve has very short threads and trying to put it through the lid and hold it while trying to place the washer and nut with one hand is difficult especially when the handle is in the way, there is very little access. Sealant on the threads doesn't really help much and I would never recommend putting glue on any threads. Loctite maybe but never glue. I'll check out their instructions on the web page, thanks for replying.

3 litre will cook enough Chana Pindi for two meals. 2 litre will cook enough rice for two meals. The reason for this is the size of item being cooked. Both 3 litre Tall and Wide cook for same number of meals. They recommend you do not fill the cooker more than 2/3 its capacity. Therefore, if you plan on cooking bulky items then the tall would be best as you could place the supplied Grid to lift items out of water yet stay within 2/3 capacity.

I didn't get a compression washer with the replacement. What should I do, it doesn't work like it used to.

What size is your cooker? The 2 Litre Stainless Steel doesn't look like it uses a washer however the 3 Litre does. You might have the wrong valve and that's an easy mistake because all the valves are stamped with a different number (JA4, HB4, HC4, TC4) and the replacement package doesn't have a part number except for B10-10 which doesn't match anything on the actual valve. If your old valve used a washer then I suggest ordering a new safety valve and make sure it's a genuine Hawkins replacement as they come with the washer.

Hello, I bought these on Amazon but I would suggest trying to find a local Hawkins dealer to get the right valve. If you can't find someone then try searching Amazon but pay attention to the size because I'm not certain if one valve fits many cookers. Maybe call Hawkins directly and ask for the correct replacement valve model number and where to find one in your area.
