I shared a bottle of white wine with Stacia, in a launderette in Putney. I must've been about 17 at the time, an aspiring drummer. I said to her how I'd love to be in a band like that, and she said no! It's just crazy, don't do it! She was really nice, so down to earth. Simon King, I met a few years later on Hayling Island, with a band called Laughing Sam's Dice. They were staying in one of their mum's caravans. They were cool, they got a gig in a pub venue there, but got thrown out because they were so loud, as I remember..! Hawkwind lived to play live gigs, if there was a happening or a festival, they'd be there. How they got through it, I don't know. Now I am 67, and for the last 12 years have been drumming with a semi- pro covers band. So, Stacia. I am a drummer at last, but you were right. X. Nick.

I was often backstage rolling up for the band, and i was 15 at the time. Back stage was something. the show had to be seen to be believed - complete darkness, the slow emergency lights on the speakers steadily speeding up, the dry ice drifting off the stage, the steady intro of other effects, all building up to the first smash on the crash symbols and on come the strobes. Its Take off. In the early days they were known as the sonic assassins, and fans were space cadets.

My first gig, still a boy, 1974. The show looked a lot like that. It was dark onstage, and the back line had UV art on the amps, which is dimly represented here. Big spacey back projections very like those. Nik Turner wore a reptile head. Stacia rolling around in a black leotard
@DarthVader-km6ku
@DarthVader-km6ku 2 ай бұрын
I saw them in 72 and it was a lot darker than this. However, after going to all the trouble of building all the models I figured I might as well let people see them! The UV black light was the hardest thing to do because I had to make the painted items glow as though they were illuminated by the florescent UV strip on the floor at the front of the stage. To make them glow each item had to have its own internal pink/purple translucent glow inside that would be invisible when a bright projected light overwhelmed it. Obviously you can't create that weird UV glow accurately when computer monitors/phone screens can't reproduce it. It was as good as I could get.
@keltyk
@keltyk 2 ай бұрын
@@DarthVader-km6ku I figured that... it's very hard to reproduce UV digitally or with any kind of photography, probably impossible. The nearest thing would probably be an artificially sharp tonal contrast, with the most intense, approximate colour you can make on the digital palette. The artificially dark contrast areas would then have to be blended in with the wider model as inconspicuously as possible. But I admit, it probably wouldn't work. You did probably the best that can be done. I definitely knew it was meant to be UV, because I remembered how it looked as a kid
@keltyk
@keltyk 2 ай бұрын
@@DarthVader-km6ku ps- Those Barney Bubbles UV amp art painted objects were on Ebay auction about 17 years ago... I didn't check what they fetched... Owning original art by BB would be quite special of itself, but I don't think the seller was aware of who'd created them
@DarthVader-km6ku
@DarthVader-km6ku 2 ай бұрын
@@keltyk Around 1:27 you can see how the glow is brighter on the kick drums than the things that are further away from the virtual UV light on the floor. I deliberately used a falloff like it would be in the real world. You can also see at 4:34 a mistake where I forgot to turn on the glow.

Fantastic job. That is probably the closest we'll ever get to see it. I can't imagine how much work went into this. Now don't get me wrong, i love it, but there are couple of errors. As someone that has clearly studied the minor details, im sure you;d like to know. Lemmy was playing his Rickenbacker on the tour. His Hopf studio bass had been stolen not long before the tour started. It was salmon pink, you can see it in the photos on the album cover. He had it sanded back to wood after the tour. Also Lemmy's stack didn't receive that psychedelic paintjob until 1974. It is great that you included the astrological seals on the stage. Unfortunately it was too impractical to do in practice, but im sure Barney would be pleased that you included them. Thanks for all your hard work it is much appreciated.
@DarthVader-km6ku
@DarthVader-km6ku 11 ай бұрын
There was a document sent to the band explaining all the arbitrary decisions that were made, including choosing the Hopf. Mainly it was because there was a really good photo of the Hopf, with all of its stickers, and no good pics of the Rick. Nice that people noticed the little nods to Barney. There are other mistakes in there but time ran out. Glad you liked it.

@DarthVader-km6ku Thanks for your reply, that explains it. I did notice a few other things but didn't want to be too picky. It makes me wonder what technology will be capable of in 10 years time. Perhaps we will see a Space Ritual film after all. Thanks again. Brilliant job.

@@DarthVader-km6ku Hi Darth, Thanks for the information, it is a shame there is no more of the album to be enjoyed in this way, but if it is done frame by frame over 6 years, it is understandable. It is without a doubt the most impressive piece of animation i have ever seen on KZbin. I am suffering from from severe depression at the moment, and it has singularly managed to cheer me up ! I have searched for Space Ritual footage for over 40 years, and have realized it will never turn up, especially with sound. This is the missing link, the super-accurate labour of love that fills the gap just nicely thanks ! On my channel I have coloured old photos, and added flashing coloured lights, but they do not come close to this masterpiece !!! It is hard to fault, even the appearance of the audio-generators is accurate. You have a fantastic eye for detail, and only someone who has studied old Hawkwind photos in minute detail will know how much time and effort you have spent. I am very pleased to see the official Optikinetics projector wheel I have called "Space Ritual" is being used on the back screen too ! This too confirms how much pain and detail you have gone to ! The more I watch it, the more my mind is blown that someone has created it. It really is the damnedest thing. I can scarcely believe it my friend ! WELL DONE ! 12/10

@@DarthVader-km6ku He/She is in every sense a genius. I cannot imagine how they started out with the project. Only those in the "deep-know" would have added things like the fans blowing paper streamers, the bubbles blowing , the right projections on the rear screen. I am guessing Dave Brock has been involved in this, he has to have been, although only Kris is credited ? There are even the astrological markings on the stage where the members are to stand !
