Perfect for the small field I have. I don’t have a tractor or bailer but am only growing about 3/4 acre for sheep. Reduces mowing and helps save on feed. I’ve been trying to figure out how to harvest and bale by hand. Great video thanks!

Hi John, I agree with you but will all the work involved, would it not be more efficient for harvesting loose hay for such as small acreage? Peace be with you, Ciao, L (Dairy Farmer, ME, USA)

Good workout. Somethings I noticed. (1) Lift the wooden block with your knees not your back. I saw you twisting in motions that could easily cause you some serious physical hurt. (2) Consider having a chair or table near your area to set the block on so your not lifting it from ground level all the time. (3) I saw a pole sitting there. Put a hinge on the pole with a long arm with another arm dangling straight down with your wooden block on it Set it up so it will compress down to half way through your container and you can use your weight in a fulcrum action to get a tighter bail. (4) Use that same fulcrum to tie the string on and push up to get a tighter string on the bale so it does no fall apart. Just some ideas if your still doing this the Video is over a year old.

Well.....I like the idea, and if you have the time and inclination to manage a field, great, especially if you haven't the money for other options.. But the longer it takes, the more opportunity for rain, sickness, other emergencies to foul the process.Hat's off to our ancestors who did all their scything and haying by hand, but this is one of those jobs that a little modern tech has really benefited.

This is great, a simple and effective ,manual method. I've just inherited a 5 acre meadow which will be splt 5050 between ponies and a hay crop, and this is the perfect solution. The compression method looks like a hell; of a workout if you're doing more than 20 bales, did you try using a heavy flat board and climbing on top to jump on it?

So glad we got a bailing machine in, worth the euro per bales as we would not have gotten the hay in dry. This looks like amazing hay. Well done at going low tech and putting in the elbow grease.

The old method of putting up hay was to put the dried hay into a haymow and have the kids pack it down by trampling it to a compact mass. Then when needed the old timers used a hay knife to cut out what they needed for the feeding. To me, bailing by hand seems like a lot of wasted work, but if that’s what you like then more power too you and good luck

Could you please do a follow up video on how you tied your bailer twine? A bit more closeup, possibly without hay obscuring the view of your knots and bottom holder plate. That would be really great, thanks.

My fathers answer to too much rubbish in the bin was to buy one of those metal compactors that fit under the wheelly bin handles. The rest of the family just cut down on the rubbish that bought. Anyway, one of those compactors, just a metal frame, would help you once your field is producing more than you can store as it would tighten up those bales. You might what a few straps in their, just in case it really fills the bin.

I actually enjoyed making bales with a baler as long as the knotters tied ok. He's going to have to pick up the pace if he wants to get that field done in a month. I worked for a local farmer in 1970 for $1 per hour. One day I stacked straw bales on a hay rack pulled behind the baler. about 100 baled later we pulled the rack to the hay yard and unloaded them and stacked them by hand. we did about 2000 that day. I earned $12.00. I don't know what I spent it on ( likely about 20 gallons of gas for my '51 dodge) but I do remember being tired that night. 20 gallons of gas today would cost $120.00. I wouldn't expect some 16 year old to put up that many bales by hand today!

This is definitely the small head strong back way of doing things! GOOD EFFORT! But if I had to bale that way I'd sell the farm and buy a condo in Florida. This is good as a novel pastime or to get a jab at the new guy on the farm but as a main means to bale it's crap. If you want to do things the old fashioned way then find some plans and build a proper baler. What you've got there friend is in all seriousness a novelty.
