A revelation. Love the gutsiness. Not excluding the finesse too.

Don't like bests lists, but Ben maybe the best 20th? Don't hit me too hard. :-)

Glorious opening - so confident, life affirming and positive = Haydn. Cello entry matches and enhances. A real duet between soloist and orchestra. I do not appreciate Britten's cadenzas (though I am generally a fan of his music). The slow movement is played extremely slowly with maximum "romanticism" bringing out a spirituality and emotionally probing quality, though still retaining the overall Haydn quality of comfort. Exuberant finale full of edge-of-seat rhythmic tension yet with many refined nuances of detail. So a great performance, but above all a great work.

Melvyn Elphee , the slow movement is too slow, in fact. But listen the "vibrato" and strong unmistakable personality of performance. He is Rostropovich. Nobody could something, but he could. He change XX century.
