One thing:many thanks for this excellent performance. The so called sunny Haydn is absent in the second movement. Most profound and deep music, only to be compared with Beethoven opus 127, slow movement and Schubert stringquintet adagio. Always loved it, but nearly no one knows this music. So thanks again!

To speak with the words of Dutch author Maarten 't Hart and I quote from his novel 'De Droomkoningin': 'In the middle movement of this trio for once it is if like Bach and Haydn are playing together at the same keyboard...Bach on the left and Haydn on the right side...:)

thank you for uploading this impressive interpretation. two questions: the 2nd movement is titled "allegretto" - isnt the tempo on this recording a bit on the slow, heavy side? what did haydn intend, labeling this movement allegretto? - not andante, for example, as he did often in his three-movement trio sonatas? second question: the recording is from 1971. the trio then was pressler, cohen and greenhouse. why post pictures during the youtube video only of pressler, hope and menesis, who were together only from 2002 until disbandoning?

Good point about the picture.

@@rsjmd I listened to the "Trio Wanderer" interpretation of this: it's a much faster tempo for the allegretto.

I have heard a lot of chamber music. And never, in any era, have I heard a texture like that which opens this unreal piece.

06:56 I read somewhere once that this second movement, a spooky minor-key affair, was probably influenced by Haydn’s reaction to one of the hottest cultural fads of the day, the Gothic novel.

I love the contrast between the joyful outer movements and the 2nd movement - Haydn was an extremely versatile composer.

These trios are written in a very different way from claaical trois, eg schubert's trios. The purpose at that time was to compensate for insudfficiencies of pinaoforte in terms of dynamics and strength. So, the cello plys in unison with the bass, and the violin is used to give more expression to the upper part.

The second movement (Allegretto) is probably the first JAZZ composition (1793). It could have been written by Dave Brubeck, but it hasn't been: It's Haydn! Who'd thunk? A magnificent performance by the Beaux Arts Trio (nothing new about that fact).

Very perceptive: Haydn himself that he always composed by first sitting at the piano and improvising
