You might notice how she plays what sounds like a hunting call two times during the orchestra's introduction. This is written but many don't play it for some reason (nor that single prior note) and start where the solo line starts. I have believed that Haydn had that in there to trick the audience into expecting what was typical for trumpets at the time which were natural trumpets (no valves or keys). However, this was written for a keyed trumpet (probably the first such piece) so I think Haydn had some fun with it. First you hear a simple hunting call typical of what you might hear from a natural trumpet. Further into the first movement you get a part of a scale. And then you part of a chromatic. Listeners to this when first played would have never heard such possibilities from a trumpet and must have be rather surprised. The trumpet, finally, was a versatile solo instrument.

Exactly, you got it. Haydn played by surprising the audience. Not only the long tone in bar 8 and the old way clarino signals in bars 13f and the scale in the middle range (from bar 37) and the chromatics in bar 47. But the best joke is the timpani sound in bar 49 as if nothing has happened while all the audience was surprised.

Extraordinaire !
