Great comment, and these early divertimenti a quattro are lovely works well worth two or three hours of anyone’s time. PS. It’s Joseph Haydn, or do you usually refer to Johannes Chrisostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart ? Catholic baptismals were *never* used in either composers’ lifetime, and there’s not a single example of either ever using any of them. Haydn would be truly astonished to see anyone refer to him today as ‘Franz’, as would Mozart any of those from the list above.

@@TomokoAbe_ Mozart and Haydn are like red and blue, brilliant but incomparable; the other point I was making was to ditch the baptismals - it’s *Joseph Haydn.*

Good evening from Mumbai, India. I have a deep rooted love for the string quartets of Franz Josef Haydn. Haydn was the father of the string quartet. Haydn during his lifetime composed 64 complete string quartets. It is solely because of Haydn that string quartets are much loved in the western world as well as in the east among classical music connoisseurs. Just the other day I was listening on KZbin to the complete string quartets of Haydn. I forget the name of the group that was playing but I was immediately transported to heaven. The string quartets of Haydn are heavenly to say the least. Because I have loved the string quartets of Haydn from the age of 10 that is why today I have such a deep rooted appreciation for the complete string quartets specially of Beethoven, Schubert, Mozart, Brahms, Schumann, and last but not the least Dvorak. The string quartets of Beethoven and Dvorak are to die for. The rasumovsky string quartet of Beethoven is my absolute favourite quartet of all time. I could listen to it anytime anywhere. Finally, this is an awesome and amazing KZbin video. This is a KZbin video which is not only a keepsake but it is an absolute treat in more ways than one. Eustace D'Sa

Great comment, read with interest. Just one point, it’s *Joseph Haydn.* Catholic baptismal names were *never* used, so the ‘Franz’ is as redundant as referring to his great friend as Johannes Chrisostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart. Haydn signs himself in every single extant manuscript, letter, score, and document (like his wills) as either Joseph (German form), Josephus ((Latin), or perhaps most commonly, Giuseppe (Italian); he would be truly astonished to see himself referred to as Franz in the 21st century - it simply was not his name.

Yes, this Heyden music, if spelled right, as if these world affairs could keep us from damnation in hell. Thank God for his lovely music which as an Inside Jew once said for folk in JCP: Judaism, Catholicism, Protestantism, and still in the world ala St.John 3:16: about removing the foreskin of our hearts: "May you not fool God, yourself, nor people." Happy 11Av Shabbat of Consolation. Furthermore, please celebrate for the 17th time, this year 2023/5783, the Lord's h2o Ministries week of love for Moshiac/Christ up to y3k/6760 for us FCI: Family Church Israel, and our posterity. Make God Smile more, and you'll go miles. Many blessings. Psalm 59-60. Amen אמנ.

Perhaps occasionally, and within a certain context; today it’s wholly inappropriate, especially as in the 19th century it acquired a patronising, disrespectful, and dismissive pejorative meaning which unfortunately leaves the composer stuck with the most ridiculous and irrelevant nickname of any great composer, and one that survives only because it is so mindlessly repeated as though it were somehow relevant.

Op 1 and 2 are Divertimentos rather than the more collective term of String Quartet.
@elaineblackhurst1509 Жыл бұрын
You’re quite right, but need to be as precise as was Haydn himself who used the Italian description *’divertimenti a quattro’* for his earliest string quartets in order to identify them as something different from a more generalised divertimento of which there are about 40 in the Hob. II section of the Hoboken catalogue; there are numerous varied examples by Mozart and many other contemporary composer as well.
