I add: the use of wind instruments in the slow movement anticipates the output of the last symphonies , Mozart and Beethoven and Schubert (akin with other minor composers) have for sure benefited of these findings

One of the best symphony by Haydn amid with Esterhaza period and the flourishment of 80's. Beethoven should have listened attentively some sections (4,15 to 4,40 e.g.) when composing 4th and also 8th symphonies , the shadow of his great Master (who had quarrelled with him! Too innovative this german boy...) is always over him.

With a skeleton crew, Haydn can accomplish some amazing orchestral effects about as well as the 19th and 20th Century composers can with all their assortment of bells and whistles.

The slow movement is one of the most experimental/excentric pieces that H composed. Full of traits and textures not found in any other contemporary composer.

Wrong, as always. Go look at a score of "Michelangelo Rossi"'s Andantino. Please stop spamming KZbin with unsolicited comments.
