The manga shows that Keith was trying to apologize to Carla and that the reason he broke Eren's belt was because he was thinking about Carla's feelings for Eren. I wish they had included these things in the anime as well.

@@zugzi lol true. I will say this in defense of that statement though, that we thought we were going to the basement in season 1 whereas noone though we'd find the One Piece in the first saga. That being said, 27 years and I'm still waiting to see what the One Piece is!!!

@@zugzi I know. It makes me think of the 7 book Stephen King Dark Tower series which took him 35 years to write. He said that so many people, people on death row, old people, terminally ill, wrote him begging to know how it ended before they died and he could never tell anyone because he didn't know. Whereas Oda has said he knew how OP would end before he started writing it. One Piece is my favorite story of all time and I shudder to think of his passing before he's done. Selfishly for me but also the man deserves to rest and enjoy his life and family.

But rather "he (you) are already special, because he was born into this world" and achieve whatever you want to achieve whether or not you were given superior talents/capabilities. Notice how 'because I was born into this world' becomes a key motivation/justification going forward for Eren.

Did you notice when Keith came back with his squad and saw Carla with baby Eren, he asked her who the child was and she said “he’s *OUR* boy” and not “he’s *my* boy??? And he was the one who carried Carla in to Dr. Jaeger’s with the plague…I think Keith and Carla hooked up, but then when Dr. Jaeger saved her and her parents’ lives, her feelings for HIM changed. But she was already pregnant with Eren by Keith. That’s why he asked Dr. Jaeger why he couldn’t avenge Carla because he didn’t want to see Eren fight and lose against the titans. And also why Dr. Jaeger had a death stare at Keith when he said to him “he’s nothing like you. He’s MY son.” I think at some point before this, Carla told him that seen wasn’t his.

It was very late in the evening and Eren was sleeping too when Grisha came to ask where Carla was, so Mikasa was probably sleeping too when that happened so she's not in on it or something lol. With that broken belt, Keith was trying to stop Eren from becoming a soldier because he thinks Grisha "cursed" his son like he did Keith by making Eren think he is somehow special and that believing that he, Eren, is special will only "burn himself out outside the walls" like it did with Keith. Eren being able to pass the "test" doesn't necessarily mean he is special (in the sense Keith describes it), Keith just curses himself, due to being a bystander, that he wasn't able to stop someone similar from going down the same path as he did in his younger years.
