Descent job, but do you think that the "UniBond" Repair Metal used on a rusted underbody to hold that wire mesh will stay..... ???

Should have painted the whole lawnmower frame since you already did all that prep work...good job!

I was watching the start of the video, and, thinking about where to cut the metal and how to shape the patch to be welded in. Then, to my horror, I realized you were going to Bondo it. I started thinking the sorts of thoughts you are likely to see in the comments. After awhile I saw that your repair turned out just fine, and I started wondering, why did it rust that way. Then I realized if you restore to original, why wouldn't it rust out that way all over again. I really don't think it is in any way unsafe. You should always do a quick walk-around before you mow, unless you enjoy replacing mower blades. Now if I were me, I would probably weld it up, and then coat the rusty/abraided areas on the inside of the mower with some kind of polymer like you used for your patch (and grind it smooth (and then paint it)). I say Bondo, it was a widely used American brand that became ( in the '60's and '70's) synonymous with not always well-done home auto repairs. (It is just fine if used appropriately.) But in the real world, you win. Thanks for sharing.

Good repair without a welder. Hayter is a good brand an worth saving for another few years. I welded my mover but if I had no welder, I would be doing a repair like yours.

..the inside job's like painting on dust... must be cleaned down to the metal first, then apply the adhesive. The idea is coming through though..

I agree. It appears that he just applied automotive body filler directly on top of a rusty surface. Will perform for a while but the whole lot will eventually start to delaminate then fall into be blade and make a horrendous mess. Might last for tow years the way it is and that was what he planned on.
@DavoShed2 жыл бұрын
Great video. I wouldn’t have thought of that. How did the repair stand up over time, about six years later on? That location is probably where all the debris shoots by on the way to the catcher so it’s probably as much abrasion as rust.

"READY PATCH" for $10 at Home Depot for a PINT and it worked for me EXACTLY as this EXPENSIVE MESS from AMAZON. I could not believe the price of that stuff.... I could have just bought a new mower and mine is a rider lol but I did find this other stuff that worked just like the stuff you used. The video in itself was a blessing for us as we live on a tight budget so I sure do appreciate it. Have a Blessed Summer Jon.

Great video my friend, you have excellent video making skills. I wish other KZbin videos were half as good. A small piece of advice though, after you cleaned up the underside of the deck try using some naval jelly and this will clean that rust right off and take it down to the bare metal making it easier for the Unibond to adhere to the metal. Thanks again, that wire mesh was just the idea I needed to do the job!
@EliminatorPerformance7 жыл бұрын
Butch Schultz The end product looks amazing, but just be careful, these decks are made from metal or aluminum from the factory, and using Bondo or similar products may not stand up to a rock or something on your yard being hit by the blade and shooting out!

I see that he hasn't answered to anyone's replies so does anyone know if the yellow "Hardener" is included when you buy the Repair Metal? I needed this so much... I want to help my husband fix our rider. It's needs a bushing.. steering wheel won't turn.. and a big chunk of the deck has a hole... Thank You so much. Waiting to hear about the hardener so we can get busy. Thank You again for helping others!

ty... it was quite EXPENSIVE when I first found it on Amazon. Talking hundreds of dollars and then a week later it was about $60 I think... Thanks for the reply though... I went with a different hardner at Lowes and only $10 for a gallon.

I will go out to the building and tell you the name of it. I had plenty left. I got that metal screen thing at Home Depot and even got it for 1/2 of a huge sheet (Only way it comes) because a small corner was bent lol... paid $5.00 for it.. I'll post the name of it tomorrow..

Hi Franco... I was wrong on the size.. it's a quart and it's called "READY PATCH" and it DOES WORK! I could not BELIEVE the price Amazon wanted for that hardener still. I could have just bought a new rider for that price LOL ---- Hope this helps!

Why not paint the rest of the mower ?
@journeystorm85856 жыл бұрын
The main idea here was simply to show us how to repair the hole. I'm sure he could probably care less what the rest of the mower looked like but just made the big gray spot nice.... Just enjoy the fact that others out there still help people instead of trying to find something wrong.

Not a good idea ever. Should a rock or nail go through your patch, you will be picking bondo pieces out of your legs. A well placed chunk of metal will punch through that patch and explode shards of patch material like shrapnel. I saw my brother do this once. Unless you weld a panel into the original frame, you are asking for trouble. All the workband effort is not really worth it considering another fram is going to cost less than that extra work. Besides, how long before that patch gives out? Its a mower, not a car.
