My father used to love to listen to me sing this song! When he passed I was 15. I locked myself in my room and sang this song over and over on my karaoke machine. Partly because I was feeling the haunting emotions like in this song and because my father loved this song.

My mum loved this song as well, she loved the part where Richard Marx’s voice went higher when he sang I think about my life gone by how it’s done me wrong there’s no escape for me this time all of my rescues are gone, long gone. My mum passed when I was 31

This purely fictional tune is set in the small town of Hazard, Nebraska. It tells the story of a local man who is accused of murder when his girlfriend is found dead by the river. The song and the video were completely different from what we had come to expect from the singer-songwriter, but it worked. “Hazard” (1991) became his eighth Top 10 smash in the US❕ How did Marx choose Hazard, Nebraska for the setting? He explained : “That’s the funniest part of the whole song. Because the song was all written except for those two syllables. So I had the opening two lines of ‘My mother came to duh-duh,’ and the rest of the song was finished except for the Nebraska line. And then the Nebraska line actually came because the syllables of it and the sound of it sang so well : ‘And leave this old Nebraska town.’ They sang so well to me that I was like, Okay, I’m sold on Nebraska. This is way before the Internet, so what I did was I called the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce and got some very nice woman on the phone and I said, ‘here’s my fax number.’ I was in Los Angeles, and I said, ‘Can you fax me a list of every town and city and municipality in the state of Nebraska?’ So all of a sudden, just page after page after page is coming through my fax machine. And I took the pages, I think there were 16, 17 pages worth of tons of names on each page. And I threw them up in the air and picked a random sheet and literally put my finger on the page, and it was HAZARD.” During a performance in 2011 […], Marx recalled thinking the fictional murder suspect was the dumbest lyrical plot he’d ever come up with. However, as it sounded different from many of his other lays, he decided to record a rough demo on cassette in his home studio. As he was singing it, his wife […] stopped by and listened. When he had finished, she said, “That’s a hit.” Marx vehemently disagreed and he confessed to the audience that he included it on his album “just to prove to her that she was wrong. Isn’t that all guys want, just to be right once in a while?” Four months later, “Hazard” was #1 in 13 countries‼️ 💚🎶💜

"My mother came to Hazard when I was just seven Even then the folks in town said with prejudiced eyes That boy's not right... Three years ago when I came to know Mary First time that someone looked beyond the rumors and the lies And saw the man inside... We used to walk down by the river She loved to watch the sun go down We used to walk along the river And dream our way out of this town... No one understood what I felt for Mary No one cared until the night she went out walking alone And never came home... Man with a badge came knocking next morning Here was I surrounded by a thousand fingers suddenly Pointed right at me... I swear I left her by the river I swear I left her safe and sound I need to make it to the river And leave this old Nebraska town I think about my life gone by And how it's done me wrong There's no escape for me this time All of my rescues are gone, long gone I swear I left her by the river I swear I left her safe and sound I need to make it to the river And leave this old Nebraska town

@Jewel Clark Eh, the music videos were no good. They were actually ridiculous because the truth is, if this were a real story, then Richard Marx's character would be the one who killed Mary (just as everyone suspected). I can understand why they'd make a video where it wasn't him though as I think people would find it disturbing that the song was from the point of view of a killer who's trying to deny the allegations.

I always saw this as Mary finally getting out of town without telling anybody and "Richard Marx" was blamed for her missing. But in reality he knew she left and he too needed to get down to the river to leave the town just like she did. Maybe they knew where to meet up because they discussed leaving so often.

I feel this song. The man who being hated by all the people of the town being accused of killing Mary just because he's the close on with her. How he tell the story by this song makes me want to find that man and give him what he havent feel for so long: love and trust.

Whoa I forgot I love love ❤️ I miss it 😢 those days my dad. My mum when she really was a spring chicken. All my brothers together. Gosh I hate when music invokes these feelings.

This is so tragic and beautiful. I usually don't like romantic songs in general because they all sound so shallow. This one is a great exception, and a great song.
