What a load of nonsense when it comes to cannons. Ships were made of thick oak planks on solid oak frames. Not bits of pine shed material. Good tv for the masses i guess but a bit of twaddle.

Hi, thanks for your comment. How do you know the ships were made of this?

@@hazardsandcatastrophes I used to build and repair wooden sailing vessels. Great that you go to the effort of putting documentaries on youtube. Its appreciated. Its just a bit of a nonsense program but good for kids I guess.

Nathan Puttock Not all ships were made of oak Most Southern European ships were made of far less forgiving wood

@@johnhealy6676 absolutely. Vessels made of Mahogany tended to be from the Afican regions where as teak vessels tended to be from the areas surrounding India. Its all about the predominant species and the best you can get your hands on at the time. Viking ships were pine for example. The major fighting fleets of the time were Oak. Hull planking depended on the size of vessel. So would range from 3 to 6 inches in thickness and in some cases was double thickness. Fighting ships had framing that was laid very close together which also formed an almost solid inner wall of timber anywhere between 8 and 18+inches thick. It tended to be the splinters that killed people in cannon battles and ships were seldom sunk outright. Further to this chain shot was designed to take out rigs to incapacitate the vessel. This was a prefered tactic of the French fleet especially as they could put British ships into drydock without engaging at close quarters in a fight they would normally loose or at best risk their own vessel. You can argue with me all day but the so called experiments were an expensive load of all toss and almost pointless. You would think that if you go to the effort of making a 9 poundrr working cannon, you would at least make a representative target. As said before. Good TV for kids or the masses.

@@hazardsandcatastrophes I think the point is here they werent made out of thin sheets of pine.

In case of Spanish armada, around that era of Elizabeth I, in Asia, it's Imjin war which Korea defended Toyotomi Hideyoshi invasion whereas Korea has advanced Cannon carrying first rate battleship but Japanese haven't!!!
