On September 19th, 2020, Ellen Putnam Paquette, daughter of noted local historian Chase Putnam, and Friends of Allegheny Wilderness executive director Kirk Johnson, were teamed up in the same canoe for the Allegheny River Clean-Up.
The water in the National Wild and Scenic Allegheny River was relatively low that day, so they were able to linger over and view the remnants of the old Hazel Street bridge in downtown Warren, Pennsylvania for a few minutes.
The Hazel Street covered bridge was Warren's first bridge across the Allegheny, but it didn't last for very long. It was built in 1840, and collapsed in 1855. It took 17 years before another bridge across the Allegheny was built in Warren.
