The family tree of Zakariya AS, Yahya AS, Maryam AS and Isa AS is closely linked. Yahya AS would later be related to Isa AS, as his mother, the wife of Zakariya AS, was the maternal aunt of Maryam AS. According to some reports, the wife of Zakariya AS and Maryam AS were with child at around the same time and she told Maryam AS that she had a premonition that the one in her belly (Yahya AS) will one day prostrate to the one in Maryam’s AS belly (Isa AS). At this time, prostrating to each other was allowed and denoted a sign of respect. Accounts differ on the circumstances leading to the death of Yahya AS, although the outcome of these reports coincided. According to one report, the King at the time was incensed because Yahya’s AS popularity with the people exceeded his. The King also desired a woman, whom, because of their close blood relationship, was prohibited to him by the laws of Allah, and did not like it that Yahya AS made the people aware of this prohibition. The woman in question, enraged that Yahya AS was an obstacle to their marriage, continued to entice the King. She kept on trying to lure and seduce him, until the King, inflamed by desire, promised to give her anything she wanted for her hand in marriage, regardless that the marriage was unlawful in Islam. She was so evil that she requested for the head of Yahya AS to be served to her on a platter. The King agreed to her demand, and deployed his army to Yahya’s AS mihrab (prayer sanctuary) where they decapitated him and brought his severed head to the King.

Sahih Muslim 2404, Book 44, Hadith 50: “حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبَّادٍ، - وَتَقَارَبَا فِي اللَّفْظِ - قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا حَاتِمٌ، - وَهُوَ ابْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ - عَنْ بُكَيْرِ بْنِ مِسْمَارٍ، عَنْ عَامِرِ بْنِ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ أَمَرَ مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ سَعْدًا فَقَالَ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تَسُبَّ أَبَا التُّرَابِ فَقَالَ أَمَّا مَا ذَكَرْتُ ثَلاَثًا قَالَهُنَّ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَلَنْ أَسُبَّهُ لأَنْ تَكُونَ لِي وَاحِدَةٌ مِنْهُنَّ أَحَبُّ إِلَىَّ مِنْ حُمْرِ النَّعَمِ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ لَهُ خَلَّفَهُ فِي بَعْضِ مَغَازِيهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ عَلِيٌّ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ خَلَّفْتَنِي مَعَ النِّسَاءِ وَالصِّبْيَانِ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏ أَمَا تَرْضَى أَنْ تَكُونَ مِنِّي بِمَنْزِلَةِ هَارُونَ مِنْ مُوسَى إِلاَّ أَنَّهُ لاَ نُبُوَّةَ بَعْدِي."‏‏ وَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ يَوْمَ خَيْبَرَ ‏"‏ لأُعْطِيَنَّ الرَّايَةَ رَجُلاً يُحِبُّ اللهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَيُحِبُّهُ اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ.‏"‏‏ قَالَ فَتَطَاوَلْنَا لَهَا فَقَالَ ‏"‏ ادْعُوا لِي عَلِيًّا."‏ فَأُتِيَ بِهِ أَرْمَدَ فَبَصَقَ فِي عَيْنِهِ وَدَفَعَ الرَّايَةَ إِلَيْهِ فَفَتَحَ اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَلَمَّا نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الآيَةُ ‏{‏ فَقُلْ تَعَالَوْا نَدْعُ أَبْنَاءَنَا وَأَبْنَاءَكُمْ‏}‏ دَعَا رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم عَلِيًّا وَفَاطِمَةَ وَحَسَنًا وَحُسَيْنًا فَقَالَ ‏"‏ اللَّهُمَّ هَؤُلاَءِ أَهْلِي." Narrated to us Qutaybah ibn Sa`id and Muḥammad ibn `Abbad, and they converged in saying, they said “Narrated to us Ḥatim, and he is the son of Isma`il, from Bukayr ibn Mismar, from `Amir ibn Sa`d ibn Abi Waqqaṣ, from his father, he said “Mu`awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan appointed Sa`d (as the Governor), then said: “What prevents you from abusing Abu Turab (`Ali),” whereupon be said: “It is because of three things which I remember Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) having said about him that I would not abuse him and even if I find one of those three things for me, it would be dearer to me than the red camels. I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) say about `Ali as he left him behind in one of his campaigns (that was Tabuk). `Ali said to him: “Allah's Messenger, you leave me behind along with women and children.” Thereupon Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said to him: “Aren't you satisfied with being unto me what Aaron was unto Moses but with this exception that there is no Prophet-hood after me?” And I (also) heard him say on the Day of Khaybar: “I would certainly give this standard to a person who loves Allah and his Messenger, and Allah and his Messenger love him too.” He (the narrator) said: “We had been anxiously waiting for it, when he (the Prophet) said: “Call `Ali.” He was called and his eyes were inflamed. He applied saliva to his eyes and handed over the standard to him, and Allah gave him victory.” (The third occasion is this) when the (following) verse was revealed: “Let us summon our children and your children.” Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) called `Ali, Faṭimah, Al-Ḥasan and Al-Ḥusayn and said: “O Allah, they are my family.”””””
