It depends, but there are a lot of spots to choose from. Officially, the airport has an observation deck pre-security, but I usually spot at the Triangle Plaza and at the Aviation Museum

Were you in the museum parking lot? I was there just today and all the planes were at the other runway, I couldn't see any planes D:

Before heading to the airport, I'd check LiveATC and obtain the latest ATIS information. That'll tell you which runway is in use at the time, though both runways can be used simultaneously as well
