We got HBO back in the 1970's. Since my Dad is a movie nut, he loved it. Then, my Mom heard the F-Bombs in the movies that HBO played. Then, we DIDN'T get HBO. :)

We got it in the early 80's, along with Showtime and Skin-e-max (yes, I still call it that...) through installing rooftop antennas for them. No cable in our area back then and the only other option was a huge expensive sattelite dish mounted in the yard. I credit that for becoming the movie fan I am today, having all of those options available instead of having to go to the theater or the VCR tape rental place. We weren't allowed to watch it late at night though, for *some* reason, lol.....

Go look up the documentary of the making of that intro and how much time and work went into making a minute and change intro for their features. Oh man I remember it was a huge deal when there would be a 2-3 day free preview weekend on HBO or Showtime. We would go buy a bunch of VHS blanks and record as many movies (good or bad lol) as we could and almost always recording at the slow speed (SLP) to cram as much as we could. Lol for years these were the only way I ever saw movies outside of the theater and when DVD came out I was blown away at seeing a lot of detail I had never known existed. Ohhh the 80's/90's

@@Raskolnikov70 for reeeal lol analogue VHS tapes at best were 480p but realistically I think most people got 360p at best. Most people had an old CRT tv, hand me down VCR, and it was hooked up over RF not composite. Combined with recording at SLP (EP) you were lucky to get 240p sometimes. And the wow/flutter of the audio was also really bad. Can't forget about tracking lol I remember if someone played a tape in their VCR and it had auto-tracking I would think damn look at this top notch device. He didn't even mention "HBO antennas". Before most places had cable the only alternative you had to broadcast TV was installing a 10-foot-wide sattelite dish in your yard. HBO began offering small rooftop antennas to pick up its service which were just as cheap and easy as a regular TV antenna to install. That was probably one of the main reasons they were so successful and it probably led to a much faster spread of cable TV networks in the country. And NOW I feel really old.....

Last Week Tonight With John Oliver is my favourite HBO show. Funny, insightful, and intelligent. Plus it's really really cool to see a man with so much control over a show, HBO stands behind everything John does, even going as far to make a Coal Baron sue them in a SLAPP Suit and still stand behind him. I feel HBO Max didn’t have to worry too much about advertising. Not just because of the HBO name, but the majority of people already subscribed to HBO get HBO Max free. The launch day stuff wouldn’t have been anything to make me go to it day 1, but since I got it through my cable, I used it day 1. Additionally, another benefit it has is it’s picking up a lot of smaller shows with strong followings that were on smaller/niche networks/services. The two that instantly come to mind are Search Party and Doom Patrol. Search Party was a pain in the ass to recommend because TBS would only have it available for streaming a month or so every year. Not to mention, I know I was dying for a new season after waiting 3 years, so you bet your ass I knew it was coming to HBO Max and was ready to watch it. Doom Patrol was the most praised show on DC’s streaming service, but no one was using that. Similarly, there were a lot of people wanting to watch it, and many waiting for a new season, so they knew it was there. Lastly, you have to keep in mind, one of HBO’s biggest strengths is word of mouth. Look at Watchmen this past year. It did not have a large audience at the start, but it had huge numbers by the end due to word of mouth. Quality speaks for itself, and I don’t think HBO Max had to worry too much about advertising.

I was lucky enough to get to watch HBO when cable first came out in my area of Maine. My father saw workers near the main road and asked what they were doing. They explained they were putting in cables for ...well... cable and included HBO and MTV. Because our house was so close to the road they connected it to the house and at the time it only cost a few dollars a month because they wanted people to try it. I remember my parents watching Alien on HBO and I watched it hiding because I was waaay too young and had nightmares for weeks. I have fond memories of the HBO miniature town with the camera flying through it and the MTV logo with the astronaut.

When I was a kid, we didn’t have cable for the majority of my childhood. When we finally did, we never got the expensive packages that would have included HBO. All I ever heard of it was my parents saying that it was bad because the content they play usually has a lot of bad stuff in it. Lol! Now I freaking love HBO Max! We got HBO Now to watch Game of Thrones and switched over to Max once that came out. The HBO original content is the best original content I’ve ever seen. The quality in shows like Westworld, Game of Thrones, Succession, Watchmen, the list goes on, is absolutely staggering. There arent hardly any other shows that can parallel HBO shows when it comes to quality. It’s like watching a movie, but it’s a show with lots of episodes! Not to mention all of the actually great and decently new movies they give you access to. Definitely the highest value of any streaming service I pay for

Back in the day, I used to put a mod chip in our cable boxes to get free HBO/Showtime/whatever (it unscrambled the signal). That is until my cable company figured out I was doing it and charged me like $800 for modifying their hardware.

Not gonna lie, I was a little disappointed you didn't go into more detail about the original programming and how that style of TV show altered the drama landscape. I just finished watching Oz while quarantined and something about being confined to an apartment for months with my own schedule (cook, eat, shower, exercise, etc...) made me relate to those characters/story alot more than if I were working and socialising regularly. Since finishing Oz I've been searching for reviews and analysis of the show, however, I have yet to find any on KZbin and was hoping it would at least get a mention in this video and the impact it had on television.

Oz is the originator but flawed and sometimes over the top. Oz took the risks so that the wire and the sopranos could learn from its mistakes and correct them. I got nothing but love for Oz though. Flaws and all.

I loved HBO for there stand up comedy specials I think they were the first channel to allow comedians to film specials but not censor the language the best HBO comedy specials came from George carlin especially his specials in the 90s and 2000s and Robin Williams live on Broadway will always be a work of art

Since my family was frugal when it came to entertainment and took a long time to even get basic cable, HBO was always something I looked forward to as a kid whenever we stayed in a hotel. Even rundown motels often bragged about offering HBO and would put it on their signs - apparently considering it as much of a selling point as having a pool.

Tales from the Crypt is my favorite HBO show overall. I loved The Wire, but I’m gonna have to say I liked Oz more. As for comedy, it’s either The Larry Sanders Show or East Bound and Down. That network is nothing, but quality. They really know how to make television. It also shows you how much censorship curbs the potential of what standard television shows could be if they stopped worrying so much about the sponsors. Those same companies would literally kill someone to get a 30 second ad on HBO in the middle of Game of Thrones, but get on their high horse if naughty language is used on a network show.

That's the real issue with commercial TV. It's not even about being able to add sex or vulgar language, it's having to water everything down to the lowest common denominator out of fear of offending the audience and having advertisers pull out.

We've had one about Sony with passing mention of PlayStation and Nintendo bears attention. We need an episode on Nintendo.
