Video Jukebox was an American television program which aired from 1981 to 1986 on HBO. It was a monthly series that showcased music videos from the popular recording artists of the time such as Duran Duran, Michael Jackson, Prince, Culture Club, Linda Ronstadt, David Bowie, Bow Wow Wow, Kim Wilde, Hall & Oates, Madonna, Blondie, Rush, and The Human League. A typical episode of Video Jukebox consisted of seven or eight music videos and lasted roughly 30 minutes, and the lineup changed in the middle of each month.
During the late 1970s (and before the MTV network debuted), HBO was already airing one or two music videos (or "promotional clips" as they were known at the time) as filler in between their feature films and other series. These short clips also carried the Video Jukebox moniker. When Video Jukebox premiered as a half-hour series in December 1981, HBO was reaching more households than MTV (which had been launched only four months earlier), so for about a year until MTV caught up to HBO's subscriber count, a video that aired on Video Jukebox may have received more exposure there than it would on MTV.

I'm in the future....sitting in the same living room I watched this 40 years ago, a fulltime caregiver for my mother after 2 brain tumors. Using a tablet like Star Trek Next Generation to watch cable TV that is being sent to it without a wire from a cable box in the basement - and I'm crying watching Joe Jackson in a tux 💗 Thank you for these windows

Stevie Wonder's song is beautiful! I remember hearing it on the radio back in the day when my mom and dad took my brother and I on a car ride around where we lived at the time. He is an incredible musician! I love all his songs! And Joe Jackson's Stepping Out song too.... I still love that song too whenever I hear it. Good memories of growing up during the 80s and having these songs out at the time! Btw when my younger cousin was a baby and I was babysitting her I used to teach her the song Mickey. She would just laugh and laugh at me singing it to her but she still remembers me doing that lol

As crazy as it may sound, I swear I remember watching this very episode when I was only eight years old! I used to sit by the tv with a cassette recorder and wait for these to come on, so I could hold it up to the crappy tv speaker to record songs I liked that I knew would be on. As impractical as it seems, somehow there was something very cool and rewarding about it that later generations will never get to experience. I think having to resort to doing things like that made our generation much more creative and resilient. Hard to develop that in the same mannor, when everything is available instantly without having to pay to BUY a cd, etc. and/or devise a way to obtain a poor quality copy of something until you could afford to buy it. I wouldn't trade growing up like that for anything!

Many cable providers didn't carry MTV in the early 80s, so programs like this and Night Tracks, Night Flight were where you could watch the latest videos. Heck, many people didn't even have cable and NBC's Friday Night Videos was your only choice. When MTV stopped being a sort of novelty and became more ubiquitous is about when it jumped the shark. Sometimes in the late 80s.

I grew up in Bumfuck Alabama in the 1990s and we did not have MTV for years. In 2003, we finally got it. So as far as music channels went All we had were BET, CMT, and TNN. Those of us who liked rap and pop music were SOL except for this Night Tracks, Night Flight, and Friday Night Videos. We did get FX when it first came out in 1994 and we had the show Sound fx. However.

I was in a local "camera" store who decided to extend to video displays. they had maybe a 19 inch diagonal flat screen (tv only at the time). guess how much.. remember 1982 dollars which are like 4x todays dollars (thanks BRANDON).. 20 GRAND! twenty thousand dollars for a piss poor lCd , not lEd TV. 19 inches! not sure of the relevance besides how much I hate BRANDON.
