Tv it's not the same format. The issue with the game was that it made you play half the game hunting down Abby and then tried to make you understand why she did everything. The narrative structure of the game was a bad choice. The tv show won't have that problem. The story is great, it's just that the game tried to be a tv show too much and forgot you are not a passive watcher here and after 15 hours of hating someone you have to play as said character. This wouldn't have happened if the narrative would jump back and fort between Ellie and Abby from the begining.

You talk about "well if we played as Abby in the first one" but the thing is, we don't, we play as Joel for almost the entire game and learn why he is the way he is and love his relationship with Ellie, then the second game drops and Abby gives the players a reason to hate her right off the bat, and then they go and make you play as her for 12 hours in an attempt to make you feel for her and make Ellie look evil, they destroyed the bonds that made people fall in love with the first game. Thing is, ever since the second game came out, a huge chunk of the fanbase took a liking to acting like Joel was nothing but an irredeemable monster, just because they fell for a simple "revenge is bad story" (Unless you're called Abby). So yeah, people aren't dumb for hating on a character like her, just as people aren't dumb for liking her either, both have their reasons, but it's a shame that so much of the fanbase decided to act like the only parts of the first game that exist are the line about Joel killing a bunch of people during the twenty years before meeting Ellie, and him killing the fireflies and dooming a mankind that had done nothing but take from him since the game started.

I think the whole story and characters were written so well and there’s so much more depth to them than just “that buff girl killed off Joel! She’s evil!”. Literally every person in that world/universe is more than black and white and I love the second game as it gives the NPCs names and has them cry out for each other when we as the player start picking them off. I 100% agree with you, anyone that just blindly hates Abby is immature and are missing out on some absolutely incredible writing!
