The way I use Lifeline was as a public face for the G.I. Joe team that was Top Secret. Cobra would come into a city or village and start a fight. After the fighting was over Lifeline, Barbecue,Tollbooth, Law & Order, Airtight, and Chuckles would come in and do clean up.

I really liked this figure's look and accessories. He had a .45 in his hand, so the extreme cartoon personality wasn't something I followed. He was often pictured in the Havoc's little sentry vehicle, so I liked to put him there.

I always liked Lifeline. Even from the cartoon. Which is how I got exposed to him. I just thought it was a neat idea to have a pacifist among the Joes. Plus I was never the kid who wanted to fight others anyway so I could relate to him. Also liked First Aid from Transformers for the same reason. And now the two have crossed paths as there's a female Autobot using the name Lifeline who's also a pacifist. It all comes full circle!

Top-tier figure and always one of my favorites. Despite the pacifist stance of the character (which I always adhered to), one of my favorite scenarios involved him absolutely losing his shit, going crazy, and singlehandedly taking on half a dozen Cobra and tearing them to shreds. Literally. Like, dude straight-up bit, chewed and swallowed chunks of mother effers. My therapist tried to explain to my why this was, later on in my life, but recalling the good times I had with this figure always left me tuning him out. Anyways, thanks HCC for reviewing one of my all-time favorites! I've already subscribed, but I'm following you on other social media now. PM me, we could be friends. We *should* be friends. BEST... FRIENDS...

Great review, one of the best! Lifeline is one of my fav characters as adult GI Joe fan for the very same reasons you underlined in your video. It's not easy to be a pacifist in a team of elite soldier; it's not easy to be faithful to an ideal when the world around you taunts you for it. Lifelife may be annoying but he's never depicted as a coward.

i know a lot ,of you older Joe's really like the older Joe's like 82-85 that really specified the armed forces ,but in no degenerative matter or comment ,Gi Joe was never meant to be a purely armed forces toy line,it has elements of sci fi and American armed forces mixed in from the get go, I do agree that several of the late 80s early 90s characters are brightly colored neon colors but characters like Lifeline ,Barbecue ,Airtight are ok to me because you have to remember that Joe's have a sense of real life mixed in with military and sci fi ....I myself am 40 and I got into gi joe in 84 ,and have never had a problem with brightly colored figures if it makes sense to me,I.E. Lifeline Barbecue Sci Fi Airtight . I even loved the animated movie in 87 and Cobra La,I think I'm the oldest fan of Gi Joe that actually liked that stuff, from what I can tell from reviewers/Joe youtubers is that pretty much everyone that grew up with the first couple years of figures dislikes the animated movie based on the fact that it impliments Cobra La. I had a neighbor growing up that is the same way he was one year and 3 months older than me and i remember him saying the same things to me these characters are dumb because they aren't military you don't see a red medic running around on a battlefield and you don't see a red firefighter on the battlefield, that he couldn't personally see past that. I see where you coming from on your reviews and It is fun to discuss this stuff with fellow collectors, hell you have bought and reviewed several neon dysfunctional characters that I personally wouldn't piss on if they were on fire so cudo's to you,Ice Cream Soldier gag lol

Lifeline owns, I had no idea he was unpopular with anyone. That said, the only time I saw him in anything was that Special Missions issue of the comic where they were on a riverboat or something and he akkido'd the crap out of some pirates using their own momentum against them. I should also add, the modern-day version of the figure is absolutely fantastic, if you can find him deffo pick him up.

He was one of my favorite figures, even if the cartoon version sometimes annoyed me. I always used him as a character who only fought when he had no choice. So in between the cartoon version and the carded version with a gun. But, I used him a lot helping my Joes who got shot (but somehow never died).

KZbin just recommended me this video after seeing your last live and I'm very happy with this review. It's strange, but I actually wanted to own this figure after seeing one of the spotlight episodes in the animation. I didn´t mind the color then and for me the "no weapons" policy added some interesting story background for playing with my joes. By the way, this figure was renamed "Doc" in Spain, as we didn't get the original Doc (causing some confusion with these characters in other medias)

I hated the fact that Hasbro treated medics like it was WWI. Modern medics carry the same M4 rifle as anyone else. We are held to the same marksmanship standards, and we are trained with grenades in basic just like everyone else. The only difference is that we are discouraged from using crew served weapons, as this would violate our status in the Geneva Convention. Also, the red jumpsuit would make him a huge target. I had a pair of red trauma shears that I wore on my kit. My new CSM saw them while observing a field training, and solidly dressed me down for the color. No bright red. Ever! Great review as always!

I don't know. Maybe it's the particular Joe fans that I've spent time talking to over the years, but I don't know anyone who openly hates Lifeline. I've certainly heard fans debate about his pacifism, and whether he'd even be allowed to serve in the military and still maintain his beliefs. I've had people try to quote military regulations on the subject, but as a kid who'd watched M.A.S.H. for years, I had no problem with the idea of army doctors or medics being pasifists, while still recognizing the need to medical personnel to treat the wounded in the battlefield. That was Lifeline and later Stretcher's job, while Doc, as an actual MD, usually stayed back at base to give more comprehensive care to the injured. I had no problem with Lifeline's colors, as they seemed appropriate for his job, just like Barbeque. And I loved his accessories. I certainly agree that I thought it was weird to give him a gun, but I chalk that up to his pacifism being something that Sunbow added to the character. They'd completely ignored that aspect of Doc, even though it's mentioned on his filecard, and perhaps they wanted to make up the difference with Lifeline. Either way, he's one of my favorites. Interesting side note. In the early 2000s, we got a couple of new Lifelines (one a Battle Corps Lifeline with a new head, the other a repaint of Stretcher.) But for some reason, he had Robo-Joe's real name on his filecard.

I liked the review and agree with you about Lifeline. You can respect his job and respect his views. But that doesn't mean you can't be annoyed at the passive-aggressive behavior the cartoon writers gave him. OTOH his attitude would support his file card that he's there for the pension. I wouldn't call it being greedy though. If he considers himself "on the job" all the time even when off the clock then it follows he thinks he should be covered with respect to getting a pension if he gets hurt helping people when off-duty. That's not being greedy, that's wanting some extra insurance when you're in a dangerous profession.

What's funny is despite what you say about his color and stuff, I enjoyed his figure, and I only had the Rice Crispies version as a kid. I thought his character was quite cool in the GI Joe Movie, when he helped out Roadblock, and the friendship between the two seemd genuine, and he sounded as if he could careless about Cobra Commander after he turned into a snake. His voice turned kinda gravely when referencing Cobra Commander, "but there's nothing i can do for the snake....the mutation process is irreversible". It almost sounds like Lifeline wanted to completely dismiss him but ended up still at least looking him over, all be it reluctantly and you can hear it in his voice. I thought that was a nice touch and honestly was my experience with the Character.

I always thought that lifeline is inspired on Desmond Doss a wwII veteran who was a corpsman and he save lots of lives during WWII. And he didn't shot a single bullet. So even annoying caranters in g.i.joe pay homage to real life heros. That why I love g.i.joe they are not just toys.

I just chose to ignore the character media description. He was always a combat medic. Carried a gun, operated one of the door guns on the Tomahawk, punched and shooted enemies to defend a wounded joe or to help on the extraction. I only had (I still have him!!) the Tiger Force version here in Brazil (Tigre Operação Resgate, Codinome Paramédico/ Tiger Rescue Operation, Codename Paramedic), so his red uniform doesn't bothered me so much (only the yellow with black stripes). I do own a modern 30th Anniversary Lifeline and for now he'll stay in red, but I plan to have it been customized for more military colors. That version came with awesome medic accessories and two weapons, one of it being a rifle with a underslung grenade launcher! The pacifist traits are clearly from the Sunbow cartoon and was incorporated in the comics and the toy after the original figure was released. I think it's another case of Hasbro having to digest and get along with the shenanigans of the animation studio. Doc being a pacifist made sense for me (although he wasn't nothing like that in the cartoon and no hint of it on my brazilian - Estrela - version of him). What made no sense for me was sending a surgeon captain and chaplain to the "trenches" where his care would be appreciated by the troops but his full potential wasted. Doc is more fitted for rescuing missions on the Tomahawk or receiving the wounded on a FOB or mobile HQ or the Flagg. A quick response anti-terrorist organization field missions needs someone like Lifeline, a combat capable medic. On another topic, I also like to include in my list of joe combat medics Spirit since he's a shaman and have some training in "holistic medicine". I'm sure he can "jury-rig" a joe in the absence of any of the others combat medics of the team.

Hey hey! And peace as well. If I remember right, I was already in high school around the time that particular Special Missions comic came out - though I remember having the Lifeline figure. With that, I had quite a bit of respect for Lifeline thanks to that comic, especially as all that was well more or less ended well - even if the pirate queen wound up throwing the boxes in the river!

Corpsman is a navy/marine corps medic. It’s actually the only position that’s authorized to wear both navy and usmc dress uniform. That said, I believe the us army used to use that terminology back in the day. Pretty sure they had army corps men in M.A.S.H.

I guess this one is a little controversial. Yeah, he would be bad for a jungle mission that was typical for a backyard in the 80s for the generation that grew up in the shadows of Vietnam. So I get your point on that front. There is a thing about the rules of war that is recognized by much of the civilized world. We just happen to have spent a couple decades fighting an enemy who doesn't recognize those rules. You aren't supposed to shoot medics and medics aren't supposed to launch attacks. There are very real consequences for violating these rules in regard to Red Cross and United Nations aide a country receives during and after a crisis. The U.S. has surprisingly little influence on these programs, Sweden dominates The UN when it comes to how it distributes aid. It is one of the key differences in whether or not the third world and developing nations are livable or really complete hellholes. So red uniforms make some sense in like the context of full out assault. Doc didn't dress in red like that because he wouldn't really be on the field like that anyway. The difference between Doc and Lifeline medically is similar to the difference between a police officer and a lawyer. I come from a medical family and I know military nurses who skipped boot camp and basic training entirely and went directly to work in a military hospital and achieved the rank of Capt. I would hope that Hacksaw Ridge entered our conscience of war enough to redefine a pacifists role in combat. I am off on a tangent now. I think that is a sign of great content you have created again. Thank for what you do. It is such a treat to play here and participate. They didn't air the episode much but Second Hand Emotions was another Lifeline episode.

One figure I did not seek out as a youth. I remember two appearances in the cartoon of his. One is the episode where his sister was getting married and Cobra thought it would be a good idea to play with emotions. So they channel hatred in to Lifeline. So he disruputed the ceremony by beating up other Joes. The other episode I remembered him from isn't so much and episode but he was trapped in a trap that Cobra made up and the only way out of that trap was to hold on to the business end of a rifle. He wouldn't do it. Sci-fi had to get someone to hold him so he could grab Lifeline and save him.

I respected Lifeline 's stance. I disagreed, but I figured that's what the Joes fight for, freedom of choice more than anything else. As a kid we always found a way to incorporate the Hama version of his personality. As an adult I realize that Mr Hama had unintentionally caused us to play more creatively and find a way to make Lifeline work in our Joeverse. But it's your toy play with it or not how you see fit. Different strokes for different folks and all.

I love this figure. While I think the stance on pacifism made for an interesting twist, I go by what the figure tells me about the character. Lifeline comes with two pistols, one for each hand. That tells me that no matter if he's dragging a buddy back to cover with his left hand or right hand, he's always got access to a weapon. And that boot knife? That's a dagger meant for stabby stabby not medical treatment. I'll share a little secret with you guys though: the Rice Krispies version is actually the more dangerous of the two versions. After being captured and disarmed, Lifelife escapes his prison by beating Cobras to death with his bare hands. And he does it all while wearing that little grin.

EwokHunter03 I just popped on to mention Klinger was a corpsman in MASH...I did find this "Medic, Corpsman and Aidman are terms used during the Korean War to refer to enlisted men in the US Army who were trained and employed to provide medical care to troops. Although the term "corpsman" is now used mainly to refer to enlisted Navy medical personnel, the US Army did have an MOS for Medical Corpsman during World War 2 and the Korean War. Therefore when M*A*S*H uses the term "corpsman" frequently in dialogue and credits, this is historically accurate and not a goof."

I had both Lifelines, the regular and the Rice Krispy versions. I mix and matched the legs though, using the regular versions right leg and both feet but with the RK version of the left leg so no holster. I also took his gun away and gave it to Keel-Haul because I lost his. I played the empty holster off as it being part of the uniform he was given but him choosing to keep it empty. My Lifeline was still a pacifist but he wasn't like he was in the cartoon (I never read the comics.. I want to now though... anyone know of an anthology or collection or something with them all?) but not to the same degree. He was more like Doc in that he personally didn't engage in violent actions and would try to get the team to consider less aggressive action but didn't get preachy about it. The new mold was one of the few figures from that year I bought because I thought it was a much better body but I didn't like the head so I swapped it out for the RK head that I had left over LOL. I was notorious for swapping parts and making new figures.

I have always relied on the file cards to know about the characters, aside from C Commander s voice, it did nt have much impact on my stories. it seemed to me that shooting medics was quite wrong though, it s kind of like firing on a white flag, and one never attacks with a white flag either. my medics could provide support, but they were never part of an offensive. as for defense, well, one tries to save his life in danger, it s only logical. I very much liked his distinctive looks, when he got on the front lines, it tells the opposition; time out! we are tending to the wounded. there were lots of long term wounds in my stories, where characters were out for long times. and there were a lot of 'final battles' where characters were killed. it would have been neat that Hasbro made a 'mission product' like the mass device in each catalog to emphasize on missions, and have a few civilians, like scientists or something. most of my stories involved attacks on either faction s bases. good show Commander!

Awww... I was hoping by "controversial" you were going to review 1992 Roadblock with the recalled launcher, or the 1985 Listen & Fun Tripwire w/ Cobra's Revenge cassette review(which should have been recalled for being defective in quality). I didn't mind Lifeline as a kid at all. In my day, he road with Lift-Ticket in the Tomahawk. I believe if he had been packaged with the Tomahawk no one would have said anything; he's the RESCUE guy. Doesn't use his weapon- No problem... Hawk lost his pistol on the last mission and I think Tripwire will need a pistol on his next mission. The one thing I will say though is I think Lifeline's strongest moment was in the episode "My Favorite Things" when he chided Wet-Suit who was afraid the get venomous poison from the giant snake and said that the other guys give him a hard time because he's a pacifist, but saving lives requires bravery too. Great review!

I've had lots of vegan friends like that who like to remind me all the time. I must say that I'm a fan of the sunbow cartoon as opposed to a comic fan, but I generally don't like the second season very much. I actually do like lifeline somewhat though cause a large part of the show (like lots of 80s cartoons) was to teach kids lessons and I like his role because I think it could teach kids that people with conflicting views can get along. They might have disagreements, but at the end of the day they can still be friends.

I have not looked at lifeline in years.... I remember his helmet though. Looking at him from the air, his helmet has the same design as his medic badge. As a kid I thought if he was running around do his do, helicopter pilots could see the helmet and know were to land to be evac wounded...any thoughts?

I guess the biggest down side to Lifeline is that in the cartoon they treated his pacifism as an annoyance to both the characters in the show and the viewers.

I went by the file card which didn't have a peep about pacifism. Doc was the pacifist. I typically stationed Lifeline on the Tomahawk, like in the cartoon, and his job was to pull the wounded off the battlefield per the file card. If that meant shooting back at some Vipers then so be it.

I would've fashioned a lovely, sharp looking blonde (female) combat medic wearing a stylish grey uniform to follow Doc. I'd need someone to help me with her code name and backstory though! How I wish some of the character inventors could've been craftier! It's like they were thinking "Ok, stupid little kid's toy" rather than something ages could appreciate!

Another great video, too bad you didn't have the 30th Anniversary version of Lifeline to use as a comparison. I base my Lifeline on the Marvel comics version as well, it is just a more suitable and logical version of him than the animated one.
