Sgt. Slaughter was a big part of my inspiration to joining the Marine Corps. Never did earn that campaign hat though but was still an awesome time. My drill instructors were pretty much exactly as he appeared in the cartoon series, tough as nails, a man to be both feared and respected.

Speaking of wrestlers, l always thought that the "peculiar" appearance of Dr Mindender was the result of a repurposed design intended for a possible inclusion of the Iron Sheik (which at the time was Slaughter main rival) in the toyline, which failed because he didn't wanted to be associated with terrorists, no matter how colorful and outlandish.

I was going to say the same thing! It was a good way to stretch out the movie to fill five episodes. Recap previous events, then later preview the next episode. I made sure to tape it all when it was shown much later on the Cartoon Network or somewhere else.

You really took me back to memory lane with the Triple T box. I got the Triple T as a xmas present from a relative back in the day, and the Triple T was the first toy I assembled and put the stickers on all by myself; so for that particular reason, I still remember somewhat vividly when I got it, opened it and put it all together. Simpler and happier times.

Back when Vince McMahon basically gave him an ultimatum to choose between WWF or being a G.I. Joe. He told Vince “I can be a wrestler any time but when will I ever get to be a G.I. Joe.” Can’t help but respect the man for that.

Thanks for this well timed video. I literally bout my first Sgt Slaughter, V1, yesterday on ebay, first every GI Joe (apart from Snakes Eyes as Action Force driver from 1983). It should look great next to the new Action Force version, when the new Sgt figure arrives from Valaverse figures later this year.

I just sold a Hasbro LJN style Sgt Slaughter....it was a mail away figure as well and with Sarge's falling out with Vince McMahon and the WWF at the time there was no Sgt Slaughter as part of the LJN WWF SUPERSTARS line....so Hasbro essentially made one of there own to compliment the LJN line. Those are EXTREMELY RARE and can go in questionable condition for anywhere from $350-$1000!!! Very hard to come by!

I got to see the Sarge at a toy show just before the pandemic. As a bonus, you could purchase a life sized replica of the baton and have it signed by him. The price was a bit too much, but what a souvenir it would have been.

Great review. I liked Sgt Slaughter as a wrestler and Gi Joe spokesperson, but got tired of him being the be all and end all of the cartoon series. I was happy he saw minimal use in the comic. I heard somewhere that he was dropped from the DIC cartoon when he became a wrestling villain. As for the toy, version 2 definitely.

This was a great review. Despite what "Sgt. Slaughter" said, I believe you "Slaughterized it!" That baton is easily lost. So easy in fact that I nearly forgot that he had it until you mentioned it in the review. I never saw the third and fourth versions of this character. The fourth version looked horrible! I almost expected him to start jazzercising rather than "slaughterizing".

Yeah that happened to me, too. As a kid who idolized him, I was crushed to see him as a bad guy on TV going against Hulk Hogan at that time. I actually thought he was just a fictional character like the rest at first (with the exception of Fridge). It threw me for a loop when I found out he was a real life person and a wrestler at that. When he turned face again, I was overjoyed.

This was due to a different toy company (Coleco) getting the rights to Rambo after the popularity of Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985) at the summer box office. Rambo and The Force Of Freedom debuted on toy store shelves in 1986 at the same time as the cartoon series used to help sell the toys. Some of the same voice actors from G.I. Joe even worked on the Rambo cartoon. Ultimately since G.I. Joe had been around for longer and had gotten more promotion, the Rambo and The Force Of Freedom toy line did not last beyond 1986.
