Yes you can and should g=10 m/s2 for most of the JEE and NEET questions, if nothing else is specified. Although, if u is given as a multiple of 7 (e.g. 14, 28, 4.9, 9.8 or 19.6), at times g=9.8 gives "better-looking" answer Having said all that, since this is HCV questions, we get the desired or specified answer for g=9.8 I think with experience, you will get a better hang of it. :)
