A railroad slug is an accessory to a diesel-electric locomotive. It has trucks with traction motors but is unable to move about under its own power, as it does not contain a prime mover to produce electricity. Instead, it is connected to a locomotive, called the mother, which provides current to operate the traction motors

Well, its all about efficiency. The USA has an OK history with its electric locos, but some were highly successful. The main reason is it's easier and more "efficient" to use diesel fuel since it's easier to load up. As you said, it's expensive to run power lines through this country's extensive rail lines. Although, Amtrak has been running the Acela, which is highly similar to your TGVs and ICEs. The point is, electric power could prove dominant in the future, but for now, diesel fuel prevails.

Does the lead have one slug or two? (Is the third car for cargo or is it a slug?) You have enough train vids to keep my 18 glued for months and months! Thanks for posting!

Wish Amtrak had Business Class on the long distance trains, such as Coast Starlight. Bedroom space is limited, and when I travel last minute, I'll fly before I go straight coach. I travel alone, and having to sit next to a stranger between Seattle and Los Angeles isn't gonna happen! If Amtrak would wall off the last half of the last coach with large biz class seating, I would give it a try, and pay more for the semi-privacy. I wouldn't expect the same complimentary meals as sleeper class. Perhaps just a coffee card would do. A single traveler in coach is subject to being moved around to accommodate couples and families. A first class coach section would be well received, I believe.

Hello! Why most of the trains powered by combustion engines? Here in Europe, usually the trains are powered by electricity. Some of the trains are powered by diesel engine because on some rails, the electricity would be too expensive. (installinf poles, wires..etc.) But I don't think that the electricity would be expensive in the USA. Am I wrong? Whats the reason for using fuel powered trains?

Nice video! Interesting that another photographer was also apparently taking some pictures at the same station stop. I just caught the Coast Starlight yesterday rolling through Kent, WA. Hope you will visit my channel and check it out. Take care and keep posting!
