In conjunction with the Cass Scenic Railroad's Railfan Weekend, Railfan & Railroad editor Steve Barry set up a special photo charter on a couple of nearby tourist lines. While both railroads traveled through the same, beautiful West Virginia countryside, the trains they ran were what set them apart. The West Virginia Central had made two trains for the photographers: a passenger hop with a pair of Western Maryland F-Units, and a short local freight with a B&O (ex-SP) GP9 complete with a matching bay window caboose. But over on the Durbin and Greenbrier Railroad, the venerable "Climax" steam locomotive makes the most noise and smoke for the best shots and clips being recorded here in these mountains.
