(HD) Coupler Action @ The Strasburg Railroad, Strasburg, PA

This is a video of Norfolk & Western # 475 coupling, uncoupling and pulling cars at The Strasburg Railroad in Strasburg, PA. The train couples at the station, pulls the train, uncouples at Paradise, and the last coupler on the end of the train is left closed, waiting for the next trip.

the foot plate action starting at 3:05 is pretty cool. would be more so on an "S" curve or crossover.

Is that brakeman waving at the engineer or is he telling him to come ahead easy. In this case the engine is facing forward. The signal would be come ahead easy making the coupling very soft.

How does the air compressor work on a steam locomotive? Is it powered by steam?

Powered by steam yes. It's visible just ahead of the cab at 0:18, the vertical cylinders between the cab corner and the boiler. You can hear it activate at 1:02 as it recharges the locomotive's air tanks. Air from the brake compressor also operates the firebox butterfly doors and a couple other accessories on board.

KutWrite no, they don’t usually use EOT’s for excursion trains.

Why is the train driving backward?

The trains pulls the cars backwards so they don't have to turn the engine around. On the return trip, the engine faces forwards.
