Andrew Joseph I recently hit with a 16 year old who had won the 18 and unders in his city of 13,000,000. His casual rally FH cleared the net by 4 to 6 feet with a draw and bounced up to my shoulder (I stand 6' 0"). His reaction to the pace of this cooperative hitting session was, "My gosh, how quick that ball comes back!"

I think the most important thing thing a player on amateur to intermediate level can learn from this, is how effortless and loose their swings are. Recreational players seem to tense up when hitting the ball. Even while using very little strength, these pros are able to hit the ball harder than an amateur player. Because it is not about power, it is all about racket head speed.

it changed a lot the last couple of years because in my opinion he started to make it more flat specially in Wimbledon so he could spend less energy on his shots. In 2005 he used to finish a lot of points with his brutal inside out forehand, now he is more old and he needs to get a way so he can't spend so much energy. One of the things that federer have today is that he hardly gets tired even with 3 or 4 sets....GENIUS!

I feel like it should be obvious that these guys are not giving their 100% effort in this video since they're only hitting to warm up. Yet there are so many comments about how they aren't hitting correctly, or are playing bad, etc. PROFESSIONALS SAVE THEIR REAL GAME FOR MATCHES. Do not think by watching this video that Federer doesn't know how to hit a forehand. 17 grand slams say otherwise.

Because Roger uses a semi-western forehandgrip for his forehand and a eastern backhandgrip for his backhand, and hits with the same side (sometimes) he only has to move his hand about an inch to switch from forehand to backhandgrip

Yeah Fed is hitting the ball methodically at a slower pace to set his form and rythmn. Obviously he's not going balls to the wall. Try it next time you get on a court instead of blasting and spraying balls around. You might see your game jump up if you hit like that an hour or two 4 times per week. Find your form and rythmn first then gradually up your pace like most any other sport.

I do not know any player that switches his grip turning his hand forward to change to the backhand. Roger also switches his grip to the backhand turning backwards. His grip is molded in such a way that he can only hold it one way (with his current stick the red side is always on top, in this video it's the black side that's on top). Also, Roger constantly adapts his grip to the situation but on average his grip is between eastern and semi western. That's why they say it's a modified eastern grip

@jazzswingsoulblues That's what I noticed also. It shows that power comes from hitting the ball cleanly... Not swinging really hard or "arming" it.

Other than that, Roger does not use his right hand to switch from BH to FH but he uses his left hand which holds the racket at it's throat and turns the racket inside of his hand while his right hand is loose. There might be people that really switch forward to change to the BH but with Federer it's just not the case. And I asked and looked at my students and my co-worker coaches and all switch backwards on their onehanded BH, even I do. I think turning forward on a 1H BH just feels unnatural.

0:13 This is why you should not feel bad about your tennis, until you learn to hit hard like you want to make a hole on the court, simple exchanges are hard for every level of players....its all about the momentum of the ball, when its coming very fast in a straight line, if you are in the right spot(this is what you need to learn to do) its very easy to hit back with equal to higher force in the opposite direction

@Kiasko That would lead to people staying home watching the TV as opposed to coming to the stadium and buying tickets to watch the match. Only a few seats have a better view than this view. Showing matches like this would lower the income a huge amount and lead to the tennis business going into a financial crash, leading to a reduced salary for tennis players. No one here wants Roger Federer getting a lower salary... I think.

I thought Gasquet had a terrible forehand and this looks pretty good. Then I though, but his topspin backhand is not as good as I thought it was. Then I realized it was Federer. And looked at the other side. Crappy forehand, check.

@@ato.b7214 they are world class players and may hit their shots different from each other but all are great tennis players. The only bone I can oick uniformally is tour pros who still have a wimpy second serve. Murray use to be in this group with a 70-80 mph wimpy little kicker. But he was so good on defense he got by. I think he improved it. Pete always had the best first and second serve. His second power slice was in the hundreds still that's one of his weapons for winning Wimbledon so much.
