[HD] German ICE high-speed trains at Frankfurt Airport

This is what it looks like when you arrive at Frankfurt airport and continue your journey by rail. It's a nice and clean station along the Cologne-Frankfurt line and was opened in 1999. The station is dominated by InterCity Express trains (3rd generation) although a few 1G ICEs stop here as well. Both are shown in the video. While I like EMUs like the ICE 3, nothing beats the musical starting sound of the first generation.

Amazing how civilized the people are in their behavior to keep the platform so clean, here in North America, people spit chewing gum all over the place including indoors on public carpets and floors!

No different over here. This is kind of a special station, it's the entry to the german highspeed system for international guests ariving at our most important airport. We try to make a good first impression but that will change when you exit the train unless you are not taking one to a similar station like Berlin main station (but there aren't much direct services as most of them stop at Frankfurt main station instead of the airport).

I was on one of these last December (and I wasn't supposed to - I was supposed to take a Regional-Express train from München-Hbf to Nürnberg-Hbf, but because of an accident ahead, regional trains couldn't run and we were exceptionally allowed to ride on the ICE with our Bayern tickets). Very nice ride it was, even in 2nd class.

If you took the ICE quite often, I can't understand your opinion. Or are you working for Deutsche Bahn? I experienced many delays or complete cancellations many times. Further, staff is often very rude to passengers who see them as kinds of annoying applicants and not as paying customers.

Than America. Do you have a tunnel under he sea linking two countries? Are most of your buses low floor and wheelchair friendly? Do you have high speed train networks all over the country like the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and many other European countries? From my experience, the best you have in America is the Acela Express. We have the TGV, Eurostar, Pendolino, Javelin (UK), Intercity 125/225, Adelante, Velaro, Voyager and Supervoyager services in the UK and the Meridians down to Lon

It's possible trough the clap in front of the "Triebkopf" (Car, with a cab inside idk) but it is only used for towing (they did it tow the Triebkopf of the train that crashed against a bridge near Eschede in 1998 from Eschede to Munich) Sorry for my bad English. It's half self and half Google translated lol

@KuraIthys Also consider the dutch trains, where there ARE two terms. Even though they look very similar in practice, the ICM 'koploper' is considered a 'treinstel' (EMU), while the doubledeck VIRM is designed as a 'treinstam', because maintenance can be done on individual carriages, but in practice it's used as an EMU. This implies the meaning of this additional type 'treinstam', is whether or not individual trailers are ever considered independent of the train they're part of...

What does any of that have to do with this video? :D These trains are to the airport... As for trains vs airplanes. Different uses and depends on where you live. Example Paris to Switzerland tickets are around 90 euros and you can make that trip on a 350km/h trains in a amazing scenery about the same time as with plane.

we have regional and national trains. the ICE is national. it's only operating between cities. for villiages there are the regional trains. so you call the station where the ICE is operating 'fernbahnhof'. 'fern' means far. the hauptbahnhof is the most important station in every city and is often also a fernbahnhof. it means 'main-station' to distinguish it from other possible stations. hamburg for example has 4 stations (hamburg-altona, -dammtor, - harburg, -hauptbahnhof) :)

@komachi275 Well, I wouldn't be too sure about that. When they were being tested, there were no trailers for it yet. They did tests using standard German IC coaches. The trailers have scharfenberg couplers, where many EMU's can't really be uncoupled at all without specialised equipment. The ICE power cars were also used with TGV duplex coaches for a while for a marketing attempt in Taiwan. It's clearly not that difficult to use them with other carriages. It's just not common.

My American friend and I rode the ICE 3 from Nuremberg to Munich: he was really amazed at how smooth and quiet ICE 3 was at 300km/h (186mph). He had bad experience with Amtrak and Caltrain. Only ICE, I have not ridden is ICE TD (the ICE-T with diesel instead of electric motors) since they are in service under contract with Danish Railway between Hamburg and Copenhagen. I am not a fan of ICE-T because its penchant for tilting too aggressively at times on the curves.

You should show more of the intermodal transfer activity between the planes and trains. I'm curious to see people moving from one to the other.

The train station itself is a fair distance from the rest of the airport. There's quite a long tunnel (technically a bridge) that connects it with either Terminal 1 or 2 (can't remember which) with travelators so you don't have to walk the whole way. Although in the past 11 years you might have been there yourself :)

@KuraIthys Although the EuroTrain mixed the 402 power cars and the trailer of TGV Duplex, many equeptment did not connect well at that time. Such as Electropneumatic braking systems did not work then. Besides, the ICE-S, the test cars of ICE 3 was also based on ICE 2's powercar and powered middle coach which used on ICE 3 after that. I think there is not a "gap" between Multiple Unite and Push Pull mode train. For example, Japanese Shinkansen 400 Series also put on a trailer in original MUs

This train is technologically marvelous and fascinating!!! This is for South American governments that destroyed the railway systems (privatized or state-owned). The rail is the best means of transportation.

I think is much cheaper flying to far cities like Munich or even Dortmund than taking these trains. Specially from Frankfurt where you have all the connections available.

@komachi275 Obviously, the power cars and trailers are matched sets. But they still have more in common with locomotive hauled trains than with what was traditionally an MU. The closest relations of the ICE 1 power car are the class 101 and 120 locomotives, rather than the ICE 3. Also, the British class 43 HST is similar to an ICE in arrangement, but isn't considered a DMU. It's mark 3 coaches are special, but versions with minor changes were used with locomotives.

@KuraIthys I think it has some ambiguous parts in Def. of Multiple Unit becaus the "Power Car" of the ICE1 (Class 401) could not be used in other way. However, the Railjet(ES64U2) could. Beside, the trailer could not be hauled by any other locomotive, either. Although ICE1 is not in distributed mode, there are still many Multiple Units which have only one power car in a train set. Such as Taiwan Railway's EMU 100(1M4T)

Nope, first generation ICEs can't be coupled together. They're typically in service with 12 cars at all times. So using them for corridors with high demand makes sense, e.g. München-Stuttgart-Frankfurt-Berlin or Hamburg-Frankfurt.

Exellent vid, but I wish back the old Interregios and the even older D-Züge. In those good old times German Rail had an advertising saying "we operate in every weather". Today, these higly advanced hiigh-speed-trains can't deal with weather at all. ^^
