Power and the Land - Supplying Energy to Rural America Reel 2
Portrays a farm family from St. Clairsville, Ohio who are members of an REA co-operative, and contrasts their life before and after electricity. More difficult tasks are done "the old way--the hard way" without electrical power. Shows woman doing the weekly clothes washing task without the benefit of an electric clothes washer, heating water over the fire in an open hearth fireplace and using galvanized washtubs and scrub board or wash board to get the clothes clean. Young girl cleaning the chimney of a kerosene or coal oil lamp and filling the lamp reservoir. Farmer loading hay on a horse drawn wagon and cutting corn by hand. Women hanging out the washed clothes to dry on a clothes line. Shows woman ironing clothes, irons heated on top of wood burning stove. Woman lights kerosene lamp as family sits down to dinner around the dinner table. Farm family eating dinner. Farm children ( boy and girl) doing school work by the light of a coal oil lamp. 1930's

This video must be from the 1920s and 30s before electricity came to rural America. Life was hard for most people. We live the lives of luxury and ease compared to them and much of human history including Americans who lived during the depression and dust bowl days of the 1930s, we have a lot to be thankful for.

That oil lamp at 5:59 is a really cool one. That is a brand called "Alladin". It could produce as much light as a 60 watt light bulb. It's easy to tell it's an "Alladin" because it has a cloth "mantle" (normally only used in gas lamps). At that time it was probably the brightest kerosene lamp you could buy. The still make them. I keep 2 on hand for emergencies, losing the electricity etc

The generation of today is so blind they don’t know how fortunate they are but yet they still complain about everything simple going to McDonald’s and get mad because they’re taking time while they sit in their air-conditioned car or their heated car with their cell phones and heated seats, work a few hours and complain About how this sucks and how they hate life they need to go back and live like that they would come back and kiss the ground. It’s a shame that’s why the women and men were real women and men back then plus everything was made in America that’s what made America so powerful and what it was back in the days oh how I wish I could go back and live in time. The children up today are so spoiled. They don’t know how good they have it if we lose power for one day or the cell phones stop working or computers all hell breaks loose.

My Aladdin lamp puts out more than enough light to sew, read or knit by. Those folks sitting at the table had enough light to see well. The barn lantern was another story though....

My homemade bread looks like that. I have a wooden bread slicing guide. It has uniform slits in it so you lay the bread loaf in it and then slice with a nice bread slicing knife and they all come out uniform. This was probably common back then.

Okay folks, help me out here. The Coleman lantern was introduced in 1913, way before this footage was supposedly shot. If the family can afford an Aladdin lamp with a glass shade, which isn't cheap by any measure, why couldn't they also have Coleman lanterns that put out a great deal more light than the Dietz lanterns and other flat wick oil lamps?

Growing up with out power in the mountains in the 60's. We were without power during winter months living in an isolated community in the mountains. My mother would have been terribly embarrassed to have coleman lanterns around our home. We used beautiful kerosene lamps that were hand painted with beautiful scenes and crystals hanging from the rims. Most were mounted on the walls with a reflective silver fan behind them and just 4 lit our kitchen & dining room as brilliant as the electric lights in the summer months. They were stunning! We used another 4 for the living room and music room. Us kids were not allowed to have lanterns in our rooms because of safety so we spent most our our time in the common rooms and then flash lights to go to bed. Coleman was considered a "camper" or outdoor light. We did have Coleman lights and a Coleman stove for when we went camping.

Clearly a (well done) propaganda piece promoting the rural electrification program in the 1930's. And with that teaser "but one man can change that alone," possibly a campaign ad for FDR. However, the closed captions are completely useless; they appear to be the unedited output of a speech-to-text program. Deaf viewers beware.
