The Japanese Broadcast, 31 years on is such high quality and remarkable clarity - they let the couple perform and the music along with the well deserved applause is phenomenal. More importantly, no interruptions or commercials - this video is pure Olympic skating viewers heaven.

It's about time the rules in figure skating need to be changed again. Skating is an art and the beauty of it has been lost amidst the flurry of packing jumps into a program. I fact, something was lost when they stopped having the figures competition event added to the score.
@alexsdb97126 ай бұрын
The sport is over. Abused and ruined. Figure skating and other sports have suffered this way too, including gymnastics, basketball, track and field, swimming and tennis. Figure skating now doesn't exist and was stopped or put on pause for maybe the past 10-15 years, some say it stopped once the CoP system was implemented in 2005. It's time to do either of these things: bring back the 6.0 system, reinstate the compulsory figures round with CoP or with the 6.0 system (but 6.0 is best), placing limits on the amount of jumps so that if for example a skater missed 2 out of 5 jumps, then that's it - they have missed those two and can't re-do them again. This includes the quads, maybe 1 or 2 only. Stricter age requirements - that is what the junior circuit is there for. Also revert to no use of vocals in programs. If they want to use vocals then the skater could go turn professional and join the pro circuit, and then I like this one too - more strict in coaching team being from the skater's country so that it will show their true level of ability and coaching level. Good luck to the sport of FIGURE skating, or in French, Patinage ARTISTIQUE (ARTISTIC Skating).

agreed - this is the best pairs long program ever. Innovative, graceful, just beautiful. Though I do adore Gordeeva and Grinkov, this just goes to show how important 'marketing' and a 'compelling story' can work in your favor because Mishkutenok and Dmitriev should have gotten gold in 1994 too
@eurocamp25418 жыл бұрын
Agreed. As much as I loved Gordeeva and Grinkov, I thought Mishketenok & Dmitriev were better in Lillehammer as well.
@Thatgirl19658 жыл бұрын
Gordeeva and Grinkov were at their zenith at the 1988 Olympics - no doubt. But, they were basically given the Gold in 1994 (and I feel they know it) due to the nostalgia surrounding their love story, and therefore Mishkutenok and Dmitriev were robbed of their gold and got silver. Poor Grinkov had several big mistakes in their long program. This program ranks amongst my top favorites, along with Torvill and Dean's 1984 Paso Doble, Gordeeva and Grinkov's "Jazzy Piano" number at the 1987 worlds, and Brian Boitano's"battle of the Brian's" gold medal routine in 1988.
@toxic-low-key-ghost79342 жыл бұрын
@@Thatgirl1965 yes I agree, their 88 long program was I think the best program they ever did in terms of technical precision, it was just perfect. However in 94 like you said there were big errors and even in their sp with the out of time spins since grinkov slipped a bit. If there was no media at all at that time, I believe M&D would have had a higher chance of winning, also if they went after G&G. But G&G were smart and marketed themselves, their love story certainly helped and all their positive press did them huge favours. I will never forget this interview ( fluff piece ) that was done on them at the Europeans and they showed pictures of daria and were saying how they have never skated better and they are coming back to this Olympics for daria, then it covered M&D and the reporter said that Natalia had gained weight and suffered from depression and if gordeeva and grinkov are enjoying the goodness of life then Natalia and Artur are not. I was shocked, media does things. Katia even said in her book that Sergei was not satisfied with his performances and wanted to go to the 98 games, as well as this, Katia said she was upset because the crowd cheered louder for M&D. They knew they didn’t deliver their best.
@annaamericanaccent91842 жыл бұрын
M&D’s choreography in their amateur career always was more creative and cohesive without any breaks in music. G&G were magical in some of their professional numbers but not as much in their amateur competitive skating.

I had seen this program in 1992 and was just mesmerized. M&D's 1994 performance was so much more interesting and had fewer mistakes. I know you can almost not say that because of the love story and the tragedy of G&G, but I really love the more creative professional programs they did, like the Rhodin number and the gala number of 1994. There they match artistry with their superior connection and general skating quality.
