I only now realized that the whistle at the beginning is the whistle of Protoman. That's what is left of him, his iconic whistle, inside the brains and hearts of people of the City. I feel like this will be the key, instead of being liberated by one superhero, the people need to realize that a hero is just a man who is free. That's why Protomen - who are canonically a counterculture robot band in-universe - are telling this story through their songs, to anyone willing to listen.

@dand125311 жыл бұрын
Worse still, you could argue that Dr. Light accidentally made things worse by creating Protoman. The hero he built for the people of the City was a high-tech robot designed to defeat Wily's forces, and presented to them as a nigh-messianic figure -- in other words, Protoman was an exemplar that the people could not hope to live up to, making them even more apathetic than before. And when he fell, the people fell with him. Yeah, the Protomen universe just kind of hates poor Tom like that.

Part of me wonders if Light repeating you are not him is Light trying to tell that to himself. That his second son isn't like his brother, so therefore he won't fall to darkness like his brother did. Now, granted, my view might be slightly colored by the very impressively put together fan video for this song, where Mega Man puts on the helmet and the image of him and Protoman seem to blend together in Light's vision.
@kakizakichannel4 жыл бұрын
"You need to know! You are not him! This fight's not yours! You cannot win!" feels like Dr Light is trying to protect Rock from going down the darkness. If Rock wins that would be nice, but he'd rather Rock live a normal life. He doesn't have to follow in his brother's path.

Something that fascinated me since the first time I've heard this song is the agitated guitar that plays every time Light says "You need to know". I'm 99% sure that these short guitar segments represent how close Light is to break from decades of suffering and frustration, and maybe, how close he is from lashing out on Mega Man for it. Decades of mistakes, false hopes and multiple failed attempts to stop Wily combined with him telling the story of how he sent his own son to die, Light couldn't contain himself anymore. And he screams at Mega Man that Proto Man's fight is not his, that he cannot win, and that he is all Light has left. All that accompanied by the same desperate, agitated guitar.

Light told Megaman that he would not win. What he meant was he would fail to bring vengeance for his fallen brother. He, Megaman, would fall just as Protoman did. The words brought new meaning unto themselves in the climax. Megaman had not won, he had not given up and he certainly had not lost. He just could not win.

I pictured Light as building Protoman from pride and desperation, making him appear similar to Dr. Light. This is what allowed him to be killed, corrupted and re-killed by Megaman. Afterwards, he built Megaman out of regret and love, making him appear more like Joe. Due to this, Dr. Light saw that Megaman could not be corrupted by Wily, but he also knew that Joe, the basis for Megaman, was killed trying to fight Wily, and that's part of why Dr. Light sings this. He believes Megaman can't win.
@DrTofu834 жыл бұрын
The point is that both were bound to fail, despite being different. Protoman was a creation of pride and desperation, giving his life for humanity and realizing that humanity, simply, didn't care. So he fell from grace and became Breakman, Wily's right hand. Megaman was a creation of regret and love, but while Joe died to attempt saving the city, Megaman literally froze because of a broken heart when he saw humanity forcing him to kill his brother, that Light was right in a fashion, he was wrong, but Light was also wrong because he literally made two sons just to suffer and die into an uncaring world. He loved so much that, upon realizing he was living in a world trampling love and turning hope into madness, his own heart broke and fled, uncaring of people begging him because they were dying. Because, when the people bemoaned being "the dead", cannon fodder for Wily, he could only remember the same people bossing him to kill his own brother and kill Wily while they were doing absolutely nothing. Since in Act III is unlikely Light will build a third robot, the only way for Act III to end up with a good ending is getting the female character in the single (Roll?) find a way to mend Megaman's heart and give him the ability to inspire heroes.

I wonder how hard it was to keep the secret of Protoman as Mega Man was leaving. I don't remember exactly, but I'm sure that Light knows Proto left to work for Wily after the people betrayed him, but here, he doesn't mention it, despite feeling responsible for keeping Mega away from trouble. This song has a grip on pathos that rivals Atlas' grip on the world. I'm not much for contemporary rock, but the way you guys have taken the tools & oils of this beloved franchise and painted whole new swaths of canvas, writing a story within the story to tell of such great sacrifice & loss... Well, I'll be sticking around to hear some more. Keep on keepin' on.

He didn't remake Protoman, he improved the original designs. Protoman always had a major flaw in his design, being that (much like a crappy cell phone) he can't hold a charge. The flaw with his power cells is why Protoman lost to Wily in the first place. If he had remade the original design, it would have just led to Light losing another son.

Something I find odd is that everyone complains about humanity being weak, and yet, protoman was designed to fight and die for his freedom, he was physically made to force freedom, he was incapable of understanding anything else until later, and how could a machine designed to fight do anything but fight, fear would get in the way of that, and we see humanity through a war machine's viewpoint, both the Stand and the Sons of Fate are seen through a machine that has no capacity for fear. It's not that humanity's weak necessarily, it's just proto and Megaman fail to understand that they themselves, are larger than life heroes, because of the fact they're machine, and thus they aren't afraid of dying because self-preservation isn't part of their programming, whereas it is in humans
@null10236 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind, even Light thinks the people are weak, right here in this song. No one else is even entertaining the idea of resistance, and the people in the story continue to submit to Wily's oppression because the machines do all the toil and work. They value their freedom less than not having to work, even if their lives are full of misery in a run-down city controlled by a madman. They're so far gone that the crowd chants for Megaman to kill Protoman instead of in support for the two to come together. the only humans we know of in the songs to resist Wily at all are Light himself (who admittedly takes an active bystander role, and by the point of this song has actually given up because there's no support) and Joe from Act II (who dies)
