I don't think so, her artistic scores were high when Tonya was good and that was because she flowed well with the music especially during her 1994 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, Free Skate, but the issue was that her anchor was her athleticism so even if her artistry was good, if she didn't make the jumps, it didn't matter. Her artistic scores in 1991 were still phenomenal especially considering she was picking unconventional music during that period.If you compare her artistic marks to other skaters like Surya Bonaly, also known for athleticism,Tonya's artistic marks weren't bad at all

I think it could be argued that Tonya should have placed 3rd in the long program here, but it could have gone either way and I think Kerrigan deserved to place over Tonya given the short program placements. I'm far from a Kerrigan fan, but seeing their performances back-to-back reinforced the idea that Kerrigan just worked on her skating more, had a lot more polish to her skating, and did more and more difficult moves-in-the-field. Harding was a more complete skater before she focused all her energy on the triple axel and you saw how laborious her skating was in-between the jumps. Even the stroking and crossovers here were labored compared to other skaters.

If only she was more in shape and got to France earlier...more serious about practicing... She could have churned out something more reminiscent of the '91 Skate America Long Program... that was seriously electric. I remember the first time I saw this performance I was really perplexed as to why she did the lutz before the axel here, as opposed to the Skate America performance. My only guess was she was superstitious and wanted to keep the same jumping order as her '91 Nationals & Worlds programs??? I heard most top skaters get a little superstitious :)
@searanch3210 жыл бұрын
I wondered that, too, about the order of the jumps. I thought that maybe she wanted to start off with an "easier" jump to get her confidence up before throwing the 3A. Who knows? This particular performance looked more like a run through for her as she was clearly not giving the choreography her all like she did at Skate America. Still, in my opinion, this should have been good enough for third.
@natew56947 жыл бұрын
I largely agree. It looked as if she could maybe have done the triple-to-triple-toe and had enough left to do the 3Sal at the end. Still, this the last decent long program of hers I can find before she won the infamous nationals in 1994.

This is essentially the same program she skated at Skate America a few months earlier where she beat Yamaguchi for the title. At Skate America she nailed the triple axel plus she did at least a triple jump-double jump combo. Here at Olympics she did neither.. I like Tonya more than Kerrigan, but Nancy's FS was stronger at Olympics. Tonya arrived at Olympics a mere three days before competition started. It hurted her chances not to be there with the other athletes when Olympics started. You have to take into consideration factors such as her lag, time difference, practice schedule, local weather, etc. You reap what you sow. Tonya, as usual, was her own worst enemy.

She's a very capable skater. Without the triple axel, which she only landed twice maybe 3 times in a competition, she can still compete with the best of them. Instead, she focused on one jump rather than her overall performance. Kristi won without a triple axel. Okasana won without one either at the next Olympics. If she focused on refining her entire program then she would've been more successful.

It's too bad how this all played out because she was a helluva skater and a great athlete. She really defied the ice queens of the day, which were favored by the judges.

Gotta give her this...She doesn't pull any punches...she goes into her jumps and spins full force. Many may fall less, but they also are not giving it all they have.

Ikr? She was a powerhouse! There's a comment on another thread from someone who was at her rink and said she could nearly travel the whole length of the ice on one stroke. And if you watch her triple axels, she jumps so high her feet are nearly level with the barrier at the rink edge. To this day she's the only skater I've seen who gets so high on the 3A she actually has 'hang time' to check out of the jump. Apparently she used to break laces and even blades all the time - the ladies boots at the time just couldn't handle her power.

I watched this live airing back in 1992 and yes Tonya skated a better long program than Nancy however Tonya did bad in the short program and entered the free skate in 6th place. Nancy entered in 2 place because she had a better short program. Nancy fell back to third after the free skate and Tonya moved up two places. Figure skating is done in rounds. They all skate their original program to get initial ranking. They then skate it again for placement order in the free skate. The short program has required elements that you only get one chance to execute. Tonya did bad and missed a few elements. Entering the long program in 6th place is a big hole to climb out of. She did move up two places but she would have needed the eventual medal winners to completely bomb their programs to have a shot at a medal. If she had hit the original program she probably would have gotten a medal. Ito entered the free skate in 4th place and moved up two places after she did well in the free skate. Tonya and Ito both moved up two places and Nancy felll to third. Nancy landed one less triple than Tonya but Nancy entered the free skate in 2nd place. She would have needed to completely miss ever jump for Tonya to move up to third. Figure skating is divided up into rounds and had Tonya had a cleaner short program she would have medeled.

80s: Doubles everywhere, salchow is one of the hardest and no one even probably attempted loop and above. 90s: Triple Axel showdown, Quad Salchow (attempted), Triple triple combination The ladies in this Olympics changed the game for the rest of the upcoming skaters.
