I knew very little back then of gymnastics. I saw her in the 96' Olympics when I was 16yo and thought she was the most beautiful and talented creature God ever made. Wikipedia puts her 8 months older than me. I thought I was in love. haha

Loved Lilia. She wasn't competing for long enough unfortunately. So graceful, accurate and powerful. Such gorgeous choreography!

It's a good thing she made the most out of the time she was competing though. A world AA gold, 2 Olympic golds and 1 silver, world vault gold, plus 3 world silver medals. And she has 2 skills named after her in the code of points on vault and floor. Very impressive for such a short career

I still remember watching her win her gold medals in the 1995 Worlds and 1996 Olympics when I was a kid, me an my sisters just loved her, we had her Olympic routines recorded on some old vhs tapes that we wore out watching them so much- she was who we wanted to be! Thanks so much for posting this- there has never been anyone like Lilia since with such all around strength, skills and perfect grace 🙌

Trivia: She's one of those all-around champions and also an event champion in the same edition of olympic competition. The other was nadia comaneci in 1976 and the other was simone biles in 2016 and also larisa latynina 1956, lilia was in 1996. It's also a bit odd that these olympic years all end in 6.

No one tumbles front better than her! Nearly everyone only does ONE FHS before any skill whereas she does two which is MUCH harder and looks INCRDIBLE.

She was a Ukranian legend. Made the most of her not so long career: 2 Olympic titles + 1 silver, and multiple world medals, it's sad that we don't see much of female Ukranian gymnastics these days

In an era dominated by Russian and Romanian powerhouses, Lilia was a cup of fresh air in the world of gymnastics. Gogean and Amânar were amazing but Lilia's floor was unique and she truly deserved her gold in Atlanta AA and FX.

She won the AA for one simple reason- she made the fewest number of errors, all small ones. Especially in that code- it made all the difference in the world, and was exactly what she needed to do.

Doesnt get enough credit as with most European or non-US gymnasts. This is the best female gymnast of the last 40 years and this floor routine is still the best since.

People still very much recognize her for her floor routine and for the AA gold she won. Romania was the only one being recognized for a long period of time, along with Russia. Now that the US has become a real world power in the sport everyone seems to have an issue. Gymnastics is more than just a European sport!!

This is the ballet basis of artistic gymnastics. Otherwise, the name of this sport should change to acrobatic gymnastics. Pure art, Queen Lilia! Memorable performance until the end of times. She really performed out of her skin.

Dance is an individual and interpretative concept. It’s not just limited to ballet. If you’re so enamored of ballet- go watch that!! The floor routines of today have their own unique qualities and individual styles, no need to demean them in favor of being a ballet performer.

This was a great routine. Her excellent dance skills gave her the edge. I think Amanar had a much more difficult routine. Her tumbling passes were in a league of their own. However, Amanar had dismal artistry which cost her the title. In my own personal scoring, I gave Lilia a 9.918 and Simona a 9.912.
