Pink Floyd performing at the ancient Roman amphitheatre in Pompeii , Italy
he main footage in and around the amphitheatre was filmed over four days in October 1971, using the band's regular touring equipment, including studio-quality 24-track tape recorders. Additional footage filmed in a Paris television studio the following December was added for the original 1972 release. The film was then re-released in 1974
he film has subsequently been released on video numerous times, and in 2003 a "Director's Cut" DVD appeared which combines the original footage from 1971 with more contemporary shots of space and the area around Pompeii

The legend says that those two kids were in fact the echoes of two ancient roman souls who wanted to witness the legendary band performing where they once lived and played. When the concert was over, the kids vanished without a trace and nobody saw them ever again.

The day I visited it was feckin closed :( For no other reason than bloody David Gilmour, who was performing there that night (See Live at Pompeii 2017). I had absolutely no idea he was performing and we couldn’t get tickets for love nor money. Whenever I watch this video, I think of me stood outside, arms crossed and annoyed that I can’t see inside of the amphitheater, like a social conservative in the 60s 😂 Ah well. I have a funny tale to tell and I can watch the performance anytime on Blu-ray 🎸 👍🏽

Lyrics : Overhead the albatross Hangs motionless upon the air And deep beneath the rolling waves In labyrinths of coral caves The echo of a distant time Comes willowing across the sand And everything is green and submarine And no one showed us to the land And no one knows the where's or why's But something stirs and something tries And starts to climb toward the light Strangers passing in the street By chance, two separate glances meet And I am you and what I see is me And do I take you by the hand And lead you through the land And help me understand the best I can? And no one calls us to move on And no one forces down our eyes No one speaks and no one tries No one flies around the sun Cloudless everyday You fall upon my waking eyes Inviting and inciting me to rise And through the window in the wall Come streaming in on sunlight wings A million bright ambassadors of morning And no one sings me lullabies And no one makes me close my eyes So I throw the windows wide And call to you across the sky

@@Jaytheone2476 It was half a dozen kids not just 2. They had bunked off school and hid amongst the ruins to see Pink Floyd. They learned more that day than they did the rest of the year at school. @@joaofelizardo6186 I went to Italy just a couple of months ago. Inside the Pompeii stadium, where the gladiators would have been while waiting for their fights, they had the documentary about the Pink Floyd concert playing. It's pretty surreal to walk down the passageway where 2000 years earlier gladiators and people condemned to death trod, hearing Echoes by Pink Floyd. Not sure if it's a permanent fixture of the stadium. Hope it is. It really topped off an incredible day.

every single member of this band is at the top of their game here. roger waters is just killing that bass line, the way gilmore just holds every note, shakes the life out of it , gives it a little wiggle and sets it free is just amazing... vicious, richard wright could have been a concert pianist. that organ breathes life into this piece, and nick mason on the drums is perhaps the most underrated drummer in the history of rock and here's the most ironic part. floyd was as much a jazz band as anything. their less is more approach to music was stunning. nothing overblown, its like they stripped a song down to its very essence its skeleton. they left huge gaps in their music that always left the listener wanting more in my opinion this was the best band that ever came out of england. a true powerhouse of creativity and craftsmanship i am so grateful that i grew up poor. i somehow managed to frankenstein a radio when i was a kid. we didnt have cool channels where i was in S mississippi, but i ran a wire way up to the top of a sweetgum tree and could now and again pick up a station out of little rock ak, and another from out in Texas somewhere. from that little home made transistor radio i learned about the king biscuit flour hour and wolf man jack. that little radio was like a time machine, an escape pod. i would lay out in the yard at night and try to tune into the airwaves and thats how i first learned of this band. i wish i were there now laying under the stars ,,, just me and that little radio and my dreams of what could be. i am very grateful for those memories.

The fact that this was filmed with nobody in the audience just makes me adore Pink Floyd even more, it gives it this feeling as if this concert withstands the test of time, creating the illusion that the concert is live to anyone who watches it at any time, as they are the only audience spectating.

It really creates a sense of isolation and creates a focus squarely on the band. Question for you. Have you seen Stop Making Sense, the live Talking Heads movie directed by Jonathan Demme? Though there was an audience in attendance, he made a point of never filming the audience. He wanted the focus to be squarely on the band, not unlike this film. I think stuff like this is fascinating.

He didn't have a direct involvement with the albums nor did he mean to inspire him but he did when he became crazy. I don't like the pre gilmour albums at all or any of Syds work. But you have give him credit for giving the band the boost at the start. There would be no pink Floyd without Syd. There would also be no pink Floyd if he stayed though. When I was in high school around 1981 or so, 4 of us went to the local drive in theater (Hendersonville TN) to see this movie. We were the only ones there and so no one was working the ticket window. So we went and parked in the center of the parking lot and then took every speaker (100's of them) and set them on the ground pointing towards the car and sat out on the hood with our own surround sound. It was grand.
