Did the Hitman who murdered Macon & Sarah's son, Ethan, get away or was he convicted and imprisoned?

Whatever happened to the murderer remains unknown. The story is about what happened to the parents after they lost their child. In the book Sarah admits that she feels like she was also killed that day. It's a great book.

Even though Macon & Sarah don't reveal their knowledge on what happened to the Hitman, is there any implication that Macon & Sarah have no idea what happened to the Hitman?

@@25FADIII The murderer escaped justice and they do not learn what happened to him. Sarah privately admits to Macon that if she could talk to that person in prison and hear their apology she would feel compelled to commit murder right then and there. The loss of his son is one of the reasons Macon feels an attachment to Muriel Pritchett and her son Alexander. You'll see if you read the novel or watch the motion picture.
