Well to make you feel better it’s a good strat to hold the coin. Holding a coin in 1st is a strat used in case you get boo’d, so that the boo will steal your coin and not whatever the other item you’re holding is. You can also item manipulate with it, where you have a coin in your first slot before you hit an item box to guarantee you’ll get something you can defend yourself with. The game doesn’t like giving you two coins at once under normal circumstances, so you’ll only get two coins if you’re in a custom rule set like mushrooms only or if the server you’re playing online races on is particularly laggy at that moment.

Holding the coin is actually a good play because of 2 things: 1. Some can have the boo item and if he didn’t hold the coin they would just take a good item like a banana or a shell 2. Because the game doesn’t give you 2 coins when you already have one (Unless it’s custom items) so it’s better to hold the coin to get an actual item.
