The thing is , he can afford it vs the ERE because they dont have early Ram. You can attack but as you can see just pop the vils in and all gone. Faye's biggest mistake is the mec contract. What she needed vs this was Strelci which is the western contract + cav , you cant fight man at arms with spears wont work.

@@mowtow90 if the Byzantines had gotten a Cheirosiphon at the English base once the lack of production buildings was scouted it could have torched so much infrastructure. It's actually fine if the vills all hide in the TCs if you're able to burn most of their houses and stop villager training that way, then their extra TCs won't be able to benefit them. And they'll be forced to try to send vills to burn down your Cheirosiphon and your horsemen can slaughter them instead of chasing them all around the base while being shot at by three full TCs at once. I think letting your horsemen all die even to get that many villager kills is not right, you need to keep at least some of them alive to keep the pressure on. Javelin Throwers would have countered longbows decently if they had come out, and Grenadiers are probably about as good as Streltsy against Armor Clad MaAs, I think that merc contract is still reasonably workable. I think most of the olive oil just went to buying siege units that got overrun instead of army units though. I don't think any Byz unit comp actually beats English MaA/Handcannon cost-effectively in a head-on engagement without serious siege support, neither Cataphracts nor Varangians trade cost-effectively, limitanei at least get 50% resist against handcannons so they at least die slowly without wasting gold. What actually would stop them cost-effectively is ranged units on stone walls which would be safe from the frontline and get added range and ranged damage resistance, plus mangonel towers. You'd need to turn the game into a battle of siege units which you could win with the Foreign Engineering Company's superior units that only cost olive oil. I think (as usual) the thing that was needed to keep the enemy army from just running straight in and camping unit production as soon as they score one single victory was walls. If you know your opponent is outbooming you, you have to prepare to be on the defense at some point. It's critical to have a safe place to retreat your army to where you can rebuild your mass if you take a bad engagement.

Byzantine units get insane value for what they cost. You look at the army vals and the DstrVals in any of these games and it's insane. I don't know if they're just better or if the mercenary contracts enable a more efficient unit composition but it's crazy. It isn't often enough but it is interesting.

I wish developers would put more thought/caution into their changes. It's another strategy game that's constantly just throwing new numbers at the game, only to "correct" something else a minute later. Dota 2 does this all the time, and mechanically (outside of the visuals) you can barely recognize it is the same game anymore. Put more consideration into buffs and nerfs, and make them less pronounced.
