The waitress asked where he was from because she heard an American accent. North American accents are rhotic. That means Americans and Canadians pronounce the ‘r’ sound in every word. Most, but not all, accents in England are non-rhotic. That means the ‘r’ sound is not pronounced when it comes after a vowel. Soooooo, he pronounced the ‘r’ sound in whatever. In England they would not. That is why he sounded American to the waitress.

Interesting. Thank you for explaining this.

I agree. He said ‘whatever you recommend,’ and ‘house burger’ with an /r/ sound. I wasn’t surprised that he was mistaken as American because I’d also assume he might’ve been raised somewhere in the US. I love his accent, though 🙂
