For those who don't understand, the ends of the belt, if you look closely, are actually behind the tip of his finger slightly. Because the plastic piece is very light compared to the belt, the center of gravity is on the tip of his finger. It's similar to the balancing bird experiment.

For those actually wondering how it works, by adding the belt it lowers the center of gravity. His finger is there now above the new center of gravity of the object, allowing it to balance out. This is the same principle of tight rope walkers. The poles on both sides bring the center of gravity much lower, where it was once around the waist, it is now in line with the rope. Slight variations of that as the person walks is compensated by them ever so slighty raising, or lowering one end of the bar. Edit: a lot of people are claiming I'm wrong or confusing with center of mass etc, which is conceptually different though similar. Everyone who is saying that “the belt shifted the center of gravity down” is wrong. It does shift the CG down, but the reason it works is because the belt is turned INWARD toward the finger, shifting the CG inward under the finger. This balances the object.

We made these 40 years ago in a grade school woodshop class. The trick is that you have to slide the belt into the little notch on the device. If you don't the whole thing will just fall. I think I still have mine somewhere, and yes, it does work.

I think I know how this works. Normally the object can’t balance on his finger because its centre of mass isn’t on his finger but it’s off his finger making it fall. But when he puts his belt on it the belt weighs so much downward that the centre of mass shifts so far below the object that it balances. I don’t know for sure so correct me if I’m wrong.
