And they fulfilled it excelently, Xavi had vision for days, Iniesta would hold the ball like no one else, and Busquets was absolutely cold blooded, and his defense was nothing to scoff at. Kroos, Modric and Casemiro function perfectly in the Madrid system, but wouldn't be able to keep the ball and play it around the same way the Barça trio did, specially Casemiro who kinda sucks with the ball. They're mostly meant to look for chances to send the ball forward in a more direct or counter-attacking strategy, while in Barça, they looked to contain the ball.

it's the one thing I disagree with what Pep said here (yeah, I know, how dare I). Because the players you mentioned are the ones that actually define the game, it's not the attackers. Messi, Christiano, Neymar, those fantastic players wins games, but it's the team around them that makes them win Championships. One just has to take a look at the competitions this year: Leverkusen, Real, Inter, by far the best defense in their respective leagues, in England it's the same with Arsenal, City and Liverpool. Of course, it helps to have those offensive superstars in your team, but Bayern is a prime example how tons of goal don't really help you if your defense isn't there
