Spoilers: Sakamoto isn't cool just because of the storyline, he's cool because he doesn't have long to live and last year he decided to have as much fun as he could before he passed away. the blond guy in the final ep is the only one who has realized that he is not going to go to america, he asks him if he regrets anything in his life before Sakamoto leaves school. there are more signs about his unfortunate destiny: he sings on the Karaoke about a father and his son who's sick and unalives the ghost girls wants to be with him because she knows he says he's never seen snow in his life and other stuff that I forgot.
